After the 2017 New Year Celebration
There are many events coordinated by the KUMW every year. In addition, the KUMW’s New Year Celebration is a very special event for me.

I learned about the KUMW for the first time as I attended the New Year's Celebration 4 years ago. Since then, I have become a committee member of the KUMW and participated in the event for the past 3 years consecutively. During those years, I have learned that the women of the committee are very passionate about what they do for their mission work.

Especially during this year's celebration, I was challenged to think about many things from different perspectives.

Unexpectedly, we needed a place for over 200 women members to celebrate this year. With the amazing grace of God, the Torrance United Methodist Church volunteered and provided everything necessary under the adverse circumstances. Their passionate and loving faiths were able to make this event possible, with great success.

It was amazing that over 250 members from 15 different churches attended this year. It was even more amazing that the Torrance United Methodist Church was able to make this event possible, despite the short amount of time. It has been raining every day before and after the event.

We were concerned about wearing our Hanboks (Korean traditional dress) on a rainy day, but with God’s grace, the rain stopped in the morning of the celebration day.

As the Bible says in Romans 12:13 ‘Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality’, The Torrance United Methodist Church exemplified this example to the mission churches; urging us to be proud and build confidence without boundaries.

Pastor Sun Ho Park was a guest speaker for “How Is Your Family?”, a seminar during the second session. He summarized by saying that God had created family. Therefore, being faithful to our family and home is being faithful to God.

As I am reflecting on many stories and emotional moments from the 2017 celebration, I look forward to many more inspiring and joyful stories in 2018 celebration.

Los Angeles City College

The Annual Northern California United Retreat

To kick off the New Year, the Annual Northern California United Methodist Women’s Retreat was held on Saturday, February 11 at Contra Costa United Methodist Church with the senior pastor Young Rae Kim.

This winter, it rained considerably harder and more frequently than in the past; with endless wetness and rains filling up a drought ridden California. However, on the day of our retreat, there was no rain. Instead, there was bright sunshine, bringing warmth and lightness to our hearts in preparation for the retreat.

We started off the retreat by first lifting praises of thanks to God for allowing and providing for such a retreat to take place. Our speaker was Jennifer Choi, an Early Childhood Education professor at the Los Angeles City College, and her message was entitled “Biblical Motherhood.” The topic of the message motivated us to spend time in self-reflection and introspection regarding our own motherhood and parenting.

“Arise, shine!” Isaiah 60:1

In the message, those of us who have already experienced the joys of being a mother and raising children to adulthood were called to establish this verse as a foundation for our lives, taking leadership over the education and nurturing of the next generation. This extends not only to our own children, but the children of the church. However, in this generation, the task of raising children in a Christian manner, though necessary, is difficult. There are many reasons as to why. We learned that the education and nurturing of our children can often fall into hands of outside influences and this raises concerns and discomfort in our hearts.

Spiritual nourishment needs to begin in early childhood and living out the gospel is ensuring that our children grow up in faith and do not leave the faith. The current culture is shifting toward educating children at younger and younger ages with a focus on academics, leaving almost no room for the gospel or spiritual growth to take place. We learned that this is the reality of our children.

Expanding on this, we learned that the smartphone hasn’t been around for 10 years, though it has drastically affected our children and their brains. It is promoting a loss of humanity and a distancing from God, serving as the #1 tool of unfortunate shift. We learned that permitting the use of smartphones by young children should be avoided altogether. We must protect our children and raise them in a Christian manner, adhering to Scripture and being confident in our faith. We learned that we must overcome our shortcomings and incorrect thoughts regarding parenting in order to allow God’s purpose and meaning in our children to be realized. In order to be used by God and live out Biblical motherhood is something we are called to do by God.

In listening to the message, we recognized all of the errors and mistakes that we had made in the past. Though these may have been embarrassing, we were encouraged that raising children is not defined by our failures, but instead is a process that continues until it comes to completion. “Arise, shine!” Let us become the light through the knowledge and wisdom our God have given us.

The member-reviewed book for the month is called Inadequacy written by Pastor Byung Rak Choi. This book is about the paradoxical nature of God’s grace.

People inherently do not like shortages. We all live with the desire for abundance and plenty, but we find all sorts of inadequacies every day.

In response we push ourselves to try and compensate for our shortcomings by comparing ourselves with others.

This causes our life's focus to become a struggle to fill those "inadequacies" by any means.
However, the author Pastor Choi tells us it is easy to simply be content with 98% of what we already have; not desiring to compensate for a mere 2%. We Christians though, are not exempt from striving for that 2% simply because it is small.
On the contrary this book tells us to be eager to fulfill the thirst of the 2% and the advantages of striving to fill this inadequacy.

The author Pastor Choi shares his own self satisfaction with grace by telling us his own experiences working with the church and his daily life. He tells us the excitement of life and God’s grace which we experience, because of inadequacies.
This book is a kind- hearted book. This book gives us courage. This book inspires us to go out onto the streets and follow God. It is a book to thank in front of God who brings out the sorrow from our deep soul. This is the paradoxical nature of God's grace.

I hope that you al find that inadequacy is not the thing to complain about, but the container which holds the God’s grace a path to God’s reaching hands.

History of the United Methodist Women in Korea,
The First Woman To Be Baptized in the Northern Region, a Bible Woman,

Sam-duk Jeon

I was born to a noble family, and only at the age of seventeen, got married to a husband of great wealth and stellar reputation with an ability to hold a high government office. My lavish life that I had earned at such a young age should have been enough to afford the envy of the world. However, most people could not understand why a well-to-do lady would do such a peculiar thing such as spending many nights on the road for Sunday worship, and gathering little ones to spread the knowledge of Christian writings.  Yet, I was not afraid of their mockery and ridicule. All my strength had been poured out to bring the gospel of Jesus into the way of salvation and to forsaken brethren who had been in sin.

It was Sam-duk Jeon who was recognized as the first female baptized lady of the North, a church pioneer, and a child educator. Although Sam-duk was born in a period when it was difficult for a noble lady to travel abroad, she was able to relinquish the plan to possess worldly desires and prestige to gain a freedom in the Lord.

In 1843, Sam-duk was born in Pyeong-an-buk-do, North Korea. Not long after her husband resigned from his office, they moved to Seoul in Boryeong Province, South Korea. However, after arrival to her husband’s hometown, Janseo, Sam-duk became distressed with her husband for taking mistresses. In order to diminish her anguish from a person who once brought succor to her life, she decided to face God. Fortunately, a turning point in Sam-duk’s life came just in the right time. When the news about Christianity that entered Pyongyang had also been conveyed to Janseo, she got on the road to Pyongyang in 1894 for which she received scornful eyes from her husband and his family for leaving them behind.

However, all things aside, Sam-duk received a glimpse of Christian Ecclesiastes and Catechisms by a person named Hall. After receiving these knowledge from Hall, the United Methodist missionary who also partook  in medical and education business, Sam-duk realized that her task was to further her studies of Christian Ecclesiastes and Catechisms. Not long after, she truly began to accept Christianity, a religion that was not known to most of the people she was surrounded with at that time.

The following year, 1895, Sam-duk turned 53. She contributed to the first female baptism in North Korea by being the actual person to be baptized. In a culture where unmarried woman and a man could not be in the same room, she opened the curtain that divided the room by cutting a hole through it. This was done to stick her head to receive a baptism from a missionary named Scranton. It is important to note that this emblem symbolized the custom of men and women, and that the small hole that was formed by Sam-duk became a breakthrough that declared liberation to women who were held back by the evils of alienation and discrimination.

After the baptism, Sam-duk Jeon continued to show her passion by never missing a service at the church located in Pyongyang, Namsan. Her devotion was also reflected on the distance between her residence and the church which was 30 kilometers away. At the time of her attendance to this church, her two daughters-in-law were baptized. Eventually, her church was built only 15 kilometers away from her residence. While she attended the women’s societies that were organized for the first time in Pyongyang in order to receive a missionary training, she also maintained her time with evangelism and education of the Gangseo church.

After becoming an evangelist wife of the Estee Missionary at the age of 59, she was sent to the North Pyeongnam province. From there on, she established a church. Due to a fact that her strength did no longer allow her to continue her career as an evangelical minister, she resigned in 1910. After her resignation, she returned to her hometown, Waksaemal, and establisheed Sung-duk school. Because of the total of nine churches that were established by her evangelism, the “30th anniversary Ceremony for the Evangelism of Mrs. Chun-duk” is held and her monument is built in front of the chapel.

Her testimony, “Although I was a handicapped, now I can walk. Although I was deaf, now I can hear. Although I was deaf-muted, now I can talk”, is juxtaposed with an idea that a person without Jesus Christ has all of the characteristics that were stated above- handicap, deaf, and deaf-muted. Her main message that a human-being can only be reshaped by Jesus Christ, is known as a predominant factor as to why she has given up her lavish life to be exchanged with the arduous life of a missionary.

How to Improve Concentration

Research shows a growing rate of attention deficit disorder among children in America,   and much of this is attributed to their dramatically increased use of digital devices. The constant mental stimulation provided by things like social media trains the mind to look for immediate gratification and makes it difficult to do things requiring more concentration. In a world where exposure to these kinds of cheap stimulations are increasing for everybody, regardless of ages, it's important to protect ourselves from its negative side effects. Here are four ways to improve concentration based on health-side.com and medical media health.com data.

* Exercise- Exercise is beneficial not only to the body also to the brain. Regular physical activity provides more blood and oxygen to the brain which increases mental capacity and helps reduce the likelihood of developing mental disorders like ADHD and Alzheimers. Exercise also releases the "feel good" hormone called endorphines, which makes it an effective and natural way fight depression.

* Meditation- Meditation can improve brain function and concentration by helping your mind regulate stressful and complex thoughts. It can help bring you to a calm state where you're better equipped to make decision rationally instead of emotionally.

* Brain games - Games such as baduk, chess and online games can improve the brain's problem solving skills, memory capacity, and ability to concentrate. When your mind is trained for prolonged concentration in a game, that same ability can transfer over to other areas of your life. One of the main reasons for reduced attention is lack of dopamine levels in the brain. Achivement in difficult game increases dopamine secretion, which becomes effective  reward to the brain for deep concentration.

* Brain Food- It is also a good idea to eat food that promote brain health. Some common examples are bananas, spinach, eggs, salmon, and green tea. One study found that students who ate bananas before tests had better grades than those who did not. Spinach is commonly referred to as a "brain food" because it is rich in lutein, folic acids, and beta-carotene. These nutrients are known to activate the brain and help prevent dementia. Eggs contain a lot of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, which is critical for brain health. A moderate intake of DHA is good for memory and mood. Salmon, which is also rich in omega-3 fatty acid, and green tea, which contains theanine, a substance that enhances mental alertness and concentration, are also good food for your brain.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

The National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
