‘선교는 선택사항이 아니라, 우리의 의무입니다.’

한국과 미국 팀의 활기찬 탤런트 쇼 후에, 유라시아 미국연합감리교회의 코디네이터인 Elena가 말했습니다.
저는 스크랜턴 여성리더십센터에서 인턴 프로그램에 참여하고 있는 박예원입니다. 저는 2017년 3월 27일부터 4월 1일까지 진행된 유라시아 기독여성 지도자 훈련에 참여했고, 찬양과 율동을 인도했습니다.
제가 만약 저 말을 훈련에 참여하기 전에 들었더라면, 그저 그런 지나가는 말로써만 들었을 것입니다. 하지만 지금은 저 말이 무슨 의미인지 마음으로 알게 되었습니다.
사실, 이 훈련에 참여하기를 결정하는 것은 제게 쉬운 일은 아니었습니다. 혼자 많은 사람 앞에 서서 찬양과 율동을 인도한다는 것이 제게 처음이었기 때문입니다. 하지만 앞에 홀로 선다는 걱정과 우려와 함께, 저는 이 유라시아 훈련을 기쁘게 준비했습니다. 준비하는 가운데에, 하나님께서 기뻐하시는 것을 느꼈고 제게 은혜를 부어주셨기 때문입니다. 하지만 혼자라는 두려움은 여전히 제 마음속에 남아있었습니다.

블라디보스토크에 도착하고 프로그램을 시작할 때, 상당수의 러시아 참가자들의 얼굴이 슬픔과 경직으로 가득 차 있는 것을 보았습니다. 하지만 이내 프로그램을 진행하면서, 그들의 얼굴이 기쁨과 행복으로 변화된 것을 보았습니다. 이것은 저로 인해 가능했던 것이 아닌, 하나님의 은혜 때문이라 생각했습니다. 우리는 함께 기쁨으로 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 찬양하는 순간 저는 혼자가 아니었고, 우리는 모두 함께였습니다.
프로그램 동안, 저는 기독교인의 행복한 결혼생활, 아이들을 위한 공감의 중요성, 기후 정의 그리고 여선교회 목적과 중요성에 대해 많이 배웠습니다. 하지만 특히 저의 큰 관심사는, 저와 미국 한인 여선교회가 어떻게 조직적으로 하나가 될 수 있었는가 입니다. 우리는 서로 만날 수가 없어서 각자의 위치에서 주어진 부분에 대해 준비했습니다. 프로그램을 진행하는 동안에 변동사항도 있었으나, 미국 한인 여선교회의 김명래 총무님께서 잘 조정해주셔서 짧은 대화만으로 유동성 있게 진행했습니다. 이는 또한 각자 맡은 부분을 잘 준비해왔기 때문에 가능했습니다. 저는 프로그램 동안에 어떠한 실수도 없었다고는 말할 순 없지만, 그것은 중요하지 않았습니다. 중요한 것은 저희의 열정이었고, 이것은 저희가 하나가 되도록 했습니다.

프로그램 마지막 날에, 러시아 여성들의 간증과 그들이 내년에도 배우기를 바라는 것을 듣는다는 것은 저희 모두에게 감사한 것이었습니다. 처음엔 오기를 꺼렸던 이들이, 프로그램하는 동안에 참여해야겠다는 마음을 먹게 되었고, 내년에는 무엇을 배우고 싶은지 이야기하는 열정을 알게 되었기 때문입니다. 이를 보고 저는, 여전히 하나님의 일을 위해 해야 할 일이 많다는 것을 느꼈습니다. 또한, 기도할 것이 늘어났다고 생각했습니다.

저는 이 훈련 동안, 러시아 참가자들, 미국 한인 여선교회 소속인 김명래 총무님, 이성은 장로님, 김메리안 사모님, 그리고 한충희 권사님, 러시아 선교사님과 목사님들께 한국 역사를 포함하여 무척 많은 것들을 배웠습니다. 저는 저 모든 분께 이 귀하고 소중한 시간에 저와 함께 해주셔서 감사하다고 말하고 싶습니다. 배운 것들을 잊지 않고, 기억하고, 기도할 것입니다. 모두 축복합니다!

Eurasia Women's Leadership Training

 “Mission is not an option. It’s our duty.”

After the Korea and US team’s fancy talent show, Elena, a coordinator of the Eurasia UMC and one of our team members, said the above quote.

I am Chloe Ye-won Park, an intern of the Scranton Women’s Leadership Center (SWLC) and participated in the Eurasia women leaders’ training, by having a section on worship and praising from March 27 to April 1, 2017. I want to share what I saw and felt during this training.

In fact, it was not easy for me to make a decision to participate in this training. This is because it was the first time for me to teachdance routines alone in front of many people. With worries of being alone on the stage, I was happy with preparing this Eurasia program. During the preparation, I felt that God would be pleased with me and God gave me mercy, so my mind was at peace. However, as all performances go, fear existed in my mind.

When I arrived at Vladivostok and started the program, I saw most of the Russian participants’ faces with sadness and hardness, but they were changed with joy and happiness! It was possible not because of me but because of God. We worshiped God with pleasure together. I was not alone. We were all together!

During the program, I learned a lot about a Christian’s happy marriage, the importance of empathy for children, climate justice, and the purpose and importance ofwomen missionaries.

Especially, I want to focus on how I and the UKMW team members become one. Because we could not meet each other, we prepared our individual sections independently and compiled what we prepared during this training. Though there were some changes, Myung Rae Lee, a manager of the UKMW, organized them well and we went ahead flexibly with a short time talks.

It was also possible because of our preparations. Truly, I cannot say that there was not any mistake during our program, but it did not matter. Our passion mattered. It made us become the one.

I was so thankful to listen to the testimonies of Russian participants and what they wanted to learn in 2018. Several participants said that though they had hesitated about participating in this training at first, they changed their minds during the program. With those testimonies, I saw their passion and realized that there are still many things to do through God’s mission and prayer.

I learned so many things during this training from the Russian participants, the UKMW members, and the Russian missionaries and pastors.I also learned much about Korean history. I want to say thank you all to all everyone who was with me in this special and precious time.

I do not want to forget those teachings and experiences. I will remember all and pray. Bless you all!

2017년 워싱턴 디씨 세미나

좋은 연합감리교회의 김지윤입니다. 전국연합회가 주최한 워싱턴 디시 평화 세미나에 다녀온 저의 소감을 말씀 드리겠습니다. 미 전역에서 세미나에 참가한 우리들을 위하여 이민과 난민들을 주제로 세미나를 주최해 주신 전국연합회 여러분들께 감사 드립니다.

미국에서 학교를 다니고 있는 한인 이민 2세로서 이번 세미나의 주제는 저에게 매우 적합한 것이었습니다. 강의를 들으면서 미국의 이민 정책에 대하여 제가 모르는 것들이 너무나 많았다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다.

아시아 불법이민자들 중 한인들의 수가 두번째로 많다는 것도 알게되어, 이번 세미나에서 다룬 주제들이 우리에게 정말 필요한 제목들이라는 생각도 들었습니다. 개인적으로는 미국의 이민과 난민 문제 향상을 위해 일하는 여러 기관에서 온 강사들을 만나게 되어 정말 감사하고 반가웠습니다. 이 세미나에서 저는 많은 사람들이 자기 목소리를 낼 수 없는 취약하고 소외된 사람들을 위하여 사회 정의 옹호 사역을 하고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 되었습니다. 

또한 이 세미나는 저로 하여금 공감과 동정심을 느끼게 했습니다. 변화를 위해서는 많은 목소리와 많은 손들이 필요하다는 것도 깨달았습니다. 믿음의 여성으로 정의를 위해 일한다는 것이 무엇을 의미할까? 기독교인들의 목소리는 믿지 않는 사람들의 목소리와 어떤 점에서 다를까?  우리는 예수님의 사랑을 어떻게 평등과 정의와 결합 및 조화시킬 수 있을까? 이런 생각들을 해 보았습니다.

이 세미나를 마친후 저는 하나님이 인류 역사를 통해 하나님의 모든 자녀들의 정의를 위하여 어떻게 역사하셨나를 배우고 싶은 생각을 갖게 되었습니다. 하나님이 지금도 사회 정의 이슈에 역사하신다는 생각을 세미나에서 배우고 나니 정말 놀라움을 금할 수가 없었습니다.

세미나 마지막 날에 워싱턴 한인교회를 방문했습니다.  거기에서 우리는 연합감리교회 여선교회와 한인 여선교회 전국연합회의 역사를 알게 되었습니다. 한국을 포함하여 세계 속에서 일해온  여선교회의 사역과 긴 역사를 듣고 배우면서 한국계 미국인 그리스도 여성으로서의 저의 역할을 다시 생각하게 되었습니다.

한국인의 자손으로서 우리는 모두 100여년전 한국에 와서 희생한 선교사들의 사역의 열매들입니다. 얼마나 놀라운 일인지요.  오래전 선교사들의 희생적인 헌신으로 우리 한인들이 복음을 알게되고 도움을 받은 것처럼, 우리 젊은 여성들은 하나님의 말씀을 필요로하고 사회에서 소외된 이들을 위하여 봉사할 의무가 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 

이 세미나는 저뿐만 아니라 모든 참가자들에게 긍정적인 도전을 주었습니다. 여기에서 배운 것들을 늘 기억하고, 또 세미나에서 만난 모든 분들과의 추억도 귀중하게 간직하겠습니다. 감사합니다.

NNKUMw Washington D.C. Seminar 2017

                  Hello, my name is Eunice Kim from Choun United Methodist Church. In the following page, I would like to share my reflection on the Peace Seminar that was held by the National Network of Korean United Methodist Women.
First, I would like to thank the NNKUMw for funding this opportunity for young women around the nation to come to Washington D.C. to learn about issues surrounding immigration and refugees.
As a Korean American student, many of the topics covered throughout the conference were relevant to my own experiences as a 2nd generation immigrant. Sitting through the various presentations made me realize how oblivious and clueless I was to many of the issues surrounding immigration policy here in the United States. I learned that Koreans make up the second largest population of undocumented immigrants. This to me displayed how relevant these conversations on immigration policy are to the Korean communities around the US.
I personally enjoyed getting to meet presenters who represented different organizations that all worked to better current immigration and refugee status here in the United States. This made me realized that many people are working hard to advocate for social justice on behalf of the voiceless. 

                  Further, the seminar provoked emotions of compassion and empathy in my heart. I learned that it takes many voices and many hands to make change. This seminar made me really think hard about what it meant to work for justice as a person of faith. How as a Christian do I stand firm in my belief while still maintaining a desire for social justice here in our world? How is our voice as Christians different from those around us? How do we weave in our understanding of Jesus’s love into conversations about equality and justice?
I left the seminar encouraged to have a desire to see how God has worked throughout time for the justice of all His children. With this in mind, it was eye opening for me to realize that God is working today and now to resolve these social justice issues.
On the last evening of our seminar we visited the Korean UMC of Greater Washington. It was there we all learned about the history of the UMW and the NNKUMw. Hearing the mission of the UMW and how it’s long history has made a significant impact on places around the world, including Korea, I was left to rethink what my role as a female Korean American Christian is in this world. As children of Korean descent, we have all in one way or another received the fruit of the work of the many UMC missionaries that came over to Korea 100 years ago. This thought is just amazing. Just as we were served by missionaries and learned the gospel through these men and women of faith, I believe that the next young generation has a duty to serve those who are marginalized and in need of God’s word. This seminar has made a positive impact on not only myself, but others as well. I will remember what I learned and also cherish the relationships made at the seminar. Thank you.

2017년 영우먼 워싱톤 디시 세미나를 마치고

올해 세미나에서 만난 모든 이들과 나눈 모든 순간에 감사합니다. 어김없이 많은 것을 배웠고 또 느꼈습니다.

이민자와 난민들에 대한 뉴스가 난무하는 요즘 무기력하다 느끼던 중에, 이번 평화세미나를 통해 제가 세상을 향해 어디서부터 첫 발걸음을 뗄 수 있을지 드디어 알게 된 기분입니다.

소중한 배움과 경험을 위해 아낌없이 지원해주시고 기도해주신모든 분께 진심으로 감사드립니다.

저는 이제 다시 세상으로 나아가 홀로 외로운 싸움을 시작합니다. 하지만 이제 제 뒤에 세상에서 함께 일하는 많은 이들과 또 이번에 만난 친구들이 든든하게 기다려주고 힘이 되어줄 것을 생각하니, 감고 있던 눈을 뜨고 닫혀있던 귀와 마음을 열고 앞으로 나갈 용기를 얻습니다.

NNKUMW의 귀한 사역에 감사드리고, 오늘의 이 만남과 교제는 앞으로 제 신앙의 여정에서 늘 축복으로 기억하겠습니다. 이 시대에 더 많은 꿈 꾸는 여성들이 이 여정을 누리기를 바라며,

Young Women’s  Washington DC Peace Seminar: Immigrants and Refugees-General Board of Church and Society

It was such an amazing time of learning and fellowship with great young women from all over the country. I was privileged to participate in the vigorous conversations on the social justice issues and work of immigrants and refugees. Along with the controversial situations under the new presidency, the passionate fellow young women’s visions and thoughts have inspired me and the diverse presentations from the various non-profit organizations for immigrants and refugees have enlightened my mind and perspective toward the world and our future.

While I was enjoying the fascinating time and place with the NNKUMw’s young women, I realized I was in my comfort zone. Living in the States for 4 years, I’ve been looking for the community where I could reside and share the authentic self. Whenever I encounter the folks from the NNKUMw, I literally laugh for 24 hours and truly appreciate every moment we create together. I am so thankful for their support, friendship, and sisterhood in faith and love. It was my second time of attending the seminar with the group and I definitely look forward to sharing more of our journeys in the world.

Now, I am going forward again to face the unfamiliarity and strangeness on my pilgrimage. This time, as a single Asian immigrant woman who is ready to meet other people who are alienated and oppressed in the system, I am willing to get involved in their lives in solidarity. That’s how I keep thriving in such community which encourages me to choose the right way for God and neighbors. I would like to thank everyone who has made all these wonderful experiences possible for all of us to learn and love as the faithful. I hope a lot of dreaming young women could experience this faithful guidance from NNKUMw. Thank you.

제28회 선교 찬양제를 마치고

따스한 햇볕이 내리쪼이는 아름다운 주일 오후!
남가주 여선교회 연합회 선교 찬양제에 참가하기 위하여 15개 교회의 여선교 회원들이 아름다운 윌셔교회의 예배당을 조금씩 조금씩 가득 메우기 시작하였습니다. 밝고 환한 미소로 그간 정성을 다하여 찬양 연습에 참여한 단합된 여선교 회원들의 얼굴에는 기쁨과 감사 그리고 조금은 설레는 듯한 마음을 엿볼 수 있었습니다.

그동안 선교 찬양제에 참여만 해왔던 제가 오히려 행사를 위하여 준비하고 봉사하는 역할을 담당하고 보니 이제껏 은근히 우리교회만을 우선으로 여기어 왔던 부끄러운 저의 모습을 보았습니다. 그러나 이번 찬양제를 통하여 저는 오히려 모든 교회의 여선교 회원 한분 한분의 마음을 읽을 수 있는 특별한 체험을 하는 기회가 되었습니다. 무려 28회를 거쳐 성장해 온 남가주 여선교회 선교찬양제를 위하여 그간 보이지 않는 곳에서 수고하고 헌신하셨던 선배님들께 감사하는 마음도 가지게 되었습니다.
감사하게도 몇 해째 먼 샌디애고에서 선교 찬양제를 위하여 참여해 주시는 훌륭한 난타팀의 개막 공연으로 시작된 찬양제는 최경애 회장님의 환영사와 이어 작년 새로이 선출되신 Grant J. Hagiya, Resident Bishop께서 바쁜 일정으로 함께 하시지 못함을 못 내 아쉬워하시며 영상으로 찬양제를 축하하여 주셔서  제 28회 찬양제를 더욱 빛내주셨습니다..
밸리교회의 멋진 입장을 첫 순서로 시작하여 15개 참가교회들의 독특하고 아름다운 찬양이 예배당 안을 가득 채웠고 각 교회 목사님께서 직접 교회 소개와 여선교회를 자랑하는 순서를 새롭게 접목하였는데 위트가 넘치는 목사님들 덕택으로 우리에게 많은 웃음을 자아내기도 하였습니다. 특히 올해는 남가주 총 남선교 연합회에서 처음으로 찬조출연을 하여 굵직한 목소리로 신나는 찬송을 불러주시고 우리와 함께 하여 주셔서 감사하였습니다.
주님의 마음, 그 한마음으로 모인 우리들!!  혼탁한 세상 가운데에서도 당당하고 굳건하게 그리스도인의 자리를 지키며 주님의 몸 된 교회를 가득 채운 우리들의 찬양을 들으시고 기뻐하실 하나님을 생각해 보았습니다. 

우리 연합회 선교 찬양제는 중국, 몽골, 카자흐스탄, 러시아 블라디보스토크의 여성, 아동 그리고 청소년을 위한 전도부인 사역 선교기금 마련을 위한 자리였습니다. 물론 저희가 계획하고 기대하였던 것 이상의 결실을 보도록 모든 것을 허락하신 하나님께 감사와 영광을 돌립니다.
각 교회의 찬양을 다 마친 후  “여기에 모인 우리”라는 찬양을 다 같이 부르며 진실로 우리가 얼마나 큰 은총을 받은 자인가를 되새기며 하나님께는 영광이요 우리에게는 큰 기쁨이 되는 귀한 자리가 되었음을 고백하였습니다.

마지막으로 김도민 고문 목사님의 인도로 우리가 전도부인 사역을 할 나라들을 위해 다 같이 중보기도 하는 시간을 통해 우리가 매년 가지는 이 찬양제의 의미를 다시 한번 확인하는 시간이 되었습니다.
새롭게 선출된 최경애 회장님과 저희 모든 임원은  이번 찬양제를 위하여 함께 기도하며 무엇보다도 선교찬양제의 진정한 목적과 의미를 모든 여선교 회원들과 함께 나누기 위하여 최선을 다하여 계획하고 준비하였습니다. 특별히 찬양제 리허설을 위하여 저녁 늦도록 저희를 도와주신 윌셔 연합감리교회의 김태호 목사님 그리고 이선기 목사님께 깊은 감사를 드립니다.
또다시 만날 제29회 남가주 여선교회 연합회 선교 찬양제를 기대하며…

After completion of the 28th Southern California Korean United Methodist Women Network Praise Night for Mission

It was a beautiful Lord’s Day with a crystal clear blue sky! In order to attend the KUMW Praise Night for Mission, 15 Southern California United Methodist Church Women arrived at the Wilshire United Methodist Church and the magnificent sanctuary was gradually filled with the members. They looked united, delighted and somewhat nervous. There was no doubt that they worked very hard to prepare to perform today. For the past few years, I simply have been an observer at this event, however this year I took a different role as I became a significant member of the KUMW.
I participated in helping and organizing the Praise Night for Mission and strangely found myself caring about each one as a sister rather than other church member. I also felt grateful to all of the seniors’ who dedicated themselves to serve all of the United Methodist Women through as many as 28th history of Praise Night for Mission.
The Praise Night for Mission started with a traditional Korean drum performance which is called Nanta and special thanks to the team who came from San Diego for a few years now to celebrate the event. After the Nanta performance, the new chair of the Southern California Korean United Methodist Women, Kyung Aeh Choi gave the welcoming adress. Soon after, we watched a video of our new Resident Bishop Grant J. Hagiya which made the Praise Night for Mission much more distinguished. Unfortunately he was unable to attend the event to congratulate us due to his busy schedule, so instead the Bishop sent us the message via video.
The Valley Methodist Church made their entrance and quickly the sanctuary was filled with all of the 15 Methodist Church’s beautiful praise. This year, we added that each church’s pastor should take the stand to introduce the church as well as their own Women's network.  Some of the witty pastors made such a fun introduction which made all of us laugh. Also, for the first time, we had a special guest appearance by the Southern California Korean United Methodist Men Network and their upbeat praise made us feel grateful for their support.
In that moment, I could not help but imagine how God feels about the whole thing and I was deeply touched and full of joy. In this corrupt world, we are here in his presence with a staunch, confident attitude and proudly doing God’s work. The main purpose of the Southern California Korean United Methodist Women Network Praise Night for Mission is to help women missionary team who focus in China, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, and Vladivostok in Russia especially for those who are women, children and youth. We have surpassed our original expectations during this event and surely we give all the glory to God.  When all 15 churches were done with the praise, we all sang the song “We Come Together Right Here” and just like the song lyrics I reminded myself once again how blessed we are. It certainly was a precious moment for all of us.
Lastly, Advisor Pastor Doh Min Kim led all of us to have a moment of intercessory prayer for the women missionary team as well as for those countries. It seemed to remind us of the true meaning of this annual event. I would like to state that new chair Kyung Aeh Choi and each of KUMW member collaborated with love and prayer for Praise Night for Mission and most of all, we focused on sharing the main purpose of the event with each and every member.  Additionally, we would like to thank Pastor Tae Ho Kim & Pastor Sun Ki Lee from the Wilshire United Methodist Church for helping us with rehearsal until late in the evening.
I am looking forward to gathering again for the 29th Southern California Korean United Methodist Women Network Praise Night for Mission!

Eligibility: Members of Korean UMW (First 130 registrants) and Young Women (First 20 registrants,  Participants for the  Young Women’s Leadership Program in Seoul or US)

Registration Fee:  $350 (includes room, board, and program fees)

Deadline: June 30, 2017

Scholarships

(1)  Travel: 50 % of airfare (or driving expense), maximum $150, will be reimbursed after the event.    You may donate your travel scholarship for the leadership training of young women as future leaders.
(2)  Scholarships for young adult women:  From 30 yrs old to 40 yrs old woman who demonstrate leadership qualities. We will reimburse $200 of the registration fee after the event.
(3) Young woman: From over the age of 18 yrs old to under the 30 yrs old sigle woman get free registration fee.
(4) We invite mothers and daughters to the Young women’s Program: Sept. 29th – Oct. 1st.

더구나 그리스도인으로서 직장에서 많은 사람과 만나면서 '일터에서 어떤 고민을 했는지, 얼마나 철저하게 힘들었는지, 그 이유가 무엇이었는지'를 저자의 생생한 체험을 통해서 전해준다.

             This book is about the first Korean woman copywriter to work at an advertising company, writing a daily letters to working Christians.  It tells the story of a wife and a mother raising children trying to successfully solve and balance the conflicts between work and home. 

Through her vivid experiences, meeting and dealing with people the reader is allowed a window into the ‘worries at work, how difficult it was, and reason why it is’ as a working Christian.  Forty years working as a copywriter and a spiritual mentor, she explains details of finding spiritual reasons at the work place. This book shows glimpses of how to succeed in life, find meaning in our daily work place, and how to please God in this battle at work.
             Everyone has different situations and no right answers, but those who have experienced it can give us some advice and help. With the question of those searching for “real” success and meaning of life, the book gives direction to what “real” success is in life. This book will give some directions for readers who are Christians at work places to balance both work and spiritual growth through the author’s substantial experiences.

“애국 운동으로 이어진 믿음의 실천자, 김세지"

한 여자로 태어나 누구의 딸로 불리고 시집을 가서는 누구의 아내로, 그리고 아들이 태어난 이후로는 아들의 엄마로 불리며 이름도 없이 그저 성만을 가진 조선의 여자들에게 이름을 가지게 된다는 것은 단순한 호칭을 얻는 것과는 비교할 수 없는 변화이었을 것이다.

“ 나는 처음에 노블( W.A. Noble) 선교사 부인의 권고로 언문을 깨친 이후에 감리교 문답을 처음 배웠다. 집안일이 바쁜 와중에도 틈틈이 쓰기와 읽기를 열심히 하며 성경공부를 한 결과, 부인이 평양에 오시던 해에 드디어 노블목사에게 세례를 받고 세디(Sadie)란 이름을 얻게 되었다. 이름도 없이 살던 나는 주의 은혜를 힘입어 세례를 받던 날로부터 여자 된 권리 중의 하나를 찾게 되었다. 이로 보면 조선 여자의 해방은 우리 그리스도교로부터 시작되었다 할 만하다. “

세례로 이름을 얻은 그 날을 자기 해방의 날로 새기며 갇혀 있는 조선의 여성들을 깨우치는 교사로  복음을 알리는 전도부인으로, 그리고 독립을 위한 민족운동에 적극적으로 가담한 김세지는, 가부장적 사회구조 속에서 이름조차 없이 살던 여성들에게 자신의 이름을 얻는다는 것은 여성도 남성과 동등한 존재로 인정받는 것이요 독자적인 삶의 권리를 찾았음을 의미한다고 회고한다.

1865년 평안북도 영유읍에서 딸만 넷인 집 막내로 태어난 김세지는 12살에 아버지를 여의고 당시의 관습대로 16살에 시집을 가게 되지만 결혼한 지 두 해 만에 남편이 세상을 떠나며 암울한 시간을 보내게 된다. 4, 5년 이후 평양에 사는 김종겸과 재혼을 하며 전처 사이에 둔 두 자녀를 정성으로 양육하며 행복한 가정을 꾸리려 노력하지만 남편의 외도로 맘고생이 많았다.
1892년 홀(W. J. Hall) 선교사가 북쪽 지방 감리교회를 개척하기 위해 평양에 들어와 전도와 교육사업을 펼치며 얻은 첫 열매인 김세지의 8촌 시아주버니인 오석형의 “예수를 믿으면 집안이 평안할 것이요, 남자는 주색잡기를 버리고 살림에 힘써 내외간에 화순 하게 되리라” 라는 말에 김세지가 예수를 믿어보기로 한 것이 1893년이다.
선교사 홀의 순직 이후 평양에 들어와 남산현교회를 중심으로 북쪽 지방 감리교 개척에 힘을 쏟은 노블선교사의 부인을 만나게 되며, 김세지는 한글을 깨우치고 성경과 기독교 교리를 외우며 구원의 확신을 갖게 되었다. 세례를 받으며 얻게 된 세지란 이름은 서양식 세디란 이름을 한자로 음역한 것이다.

1898년부터 전도부인이 되어 평안도와 황해도에서 복음 전도활동을 벌이며 매년 2,000회가 넘게 가정을 방문했고 상당량의 기독교 서적을 판매하였는데, 기생, 무당 등 소외된 계층의 여성들이 그녀의 주요 전도대상이었다. 장례가 난 집을 찾아가 시체 염을 하는 일을 도맡아 하며 전도하는 일도 그녀의 몫이었다. 기독교 복음 안에서는 그녀에게 천한 일도, 두려운 일도 없었다. 1902년 남편이 세상을 떠났지만 삼 남매를 더욱 열심히 가르치면서 꿋꿋하게 삶을 일궈나가며 자신의 영혼을 하나님께 맡기고 더욱 주의 일에 매진하였다.

노블부인을 보좌하며 평양 남산현교회 사역과 순회전도에 힘쓰던 김세지는 1903년 보호여회를 조직하였다. 정동제일교회 보호여회가 조직된 지 3년이 지난 때였다. 회장을 맡아 보호여회를 이끌며 여성들의 능력개발과 조직적인 구제활동, 전도사업을 펼쳐나가는 한편 적은 회비를 모아 기도방을 만들고 아직 복음이 전해지지 않은 곳에 기도처를 세웠다.
젊어서 과부가 된 김세지는 같은 처지의 고생하는 과부들을 동정하는 애틋함이 컸다. 1916년 과부회를 조직하여 넉넉하게 사는 과부들이 성금을 모아서 가난한 과부들을 도와주고 또 그들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 노력했다.

1919년 11월 평양의 감리교와 장로교 여성들이 연합하여 대한애국부인회를 조직할 때 부재무부장을 맡으며, 성금을 모아 3.1 운동으로 투옥된 인사들의 가족들을 돕는 일과, 해외에서 활동하는 독립운동가들을 지원하였다. 1920년 10월 일본 경찰들에게 대한애국부인회의 조직이 발각되어 김세지도 체포되면서 고문과 악형을 이겨내야 했다. 민족운동으로 확장된 김세지의 지도력은 석방된 이후 3.1운동으로 와해된 보호여회를 재건하며 다시 한번 발휘되었고, 1923년에는 모금한 기금으로 교회를 개척하기도 했다. 1925년 60세가 되어 전도부인직을 사임하기까지 김세지는 26년을 전도부인으로 살았다. 

“나는 아는 것과 배운바 그리스도 예수의 구원의 도를 많은 남녀에게 전파케 하여 이로 인하여 주의 말씀을 듣고 믿기로 작정한 남녀의 수효가 수천에 이르게 하신 하나님께 감사할 뿐이다” 전도부인 김세지가 눈물로 닦은 자기희생의 길 위에 교회가 개척되고 보호여회가 세워졌으며 그 길은 독립을 염원하는 구국의 길로 이어졌다. 그리고 그 길 위에 오늘의 여선교회가 우뚝 서 있는 것이다.

    Being born as a girl meant getting called as a daughter, a wife, and a mother. Therefore, earning distinctive names other than just last names or titles for the females in Choseon was a big revolutionary change when considering the fact that most females were mere placeholders in society.
“My first encounter with the Methodist Covenant was achieved not long after I first heard the sermon of the W.A. Noble missionary’s wife. As a result of studying the Bible with diligent efforts to read and write even during the busy house chores, I was baptized by Pastor Noble in the year his wife came to Pyongyang. That is how I got the name, Sadie. Although I was just an individual without a name, I came to find one of women’s rights through a baptism by the grace of the Lord. In this sense, it could be concluded that the liberation of Choson women originates from Christianity.
As Kim Se-ji became “Sadie” on the day of her baptism, she recalled that period as the commencement of women’s liberation. Moreover, Kim Se-ji was also an active participant in the national movement for independence, a witness to the gospel, and a teacher for women locked in a patriarchal society. She mainly taught that earning a name meant that women are recognized as equal to men and that they have found their own right to life.
In the year of 1865 in Young-eup, North Pyongan Province, Kim Se-ji was born as the youngest daughter among three older sisters. At the age of sixteen, she got married in order to follow tradition. However, after two years of her marriage, her husband passed away and not long after, she fell into depression. After four or five years, Pyongyang has remarried Kim Jong- Kyum and tried to build up a happy family by nurturing two children. However, she was greatly troubled due to her husband’s affair.
In 1892, a missionary, W.J. Hall, arrived at Pyongyang to pioneer the Northern Methodist Church and the first fruit that he obtains from creating the education department are the wise words that were spoken by Kim Se-Ji’s third cousin, Mr. Seok-Hyung Oh. After he quoted, “If you believe in Jesus, your family will be at ease, and men will be able to abandon wine, women, and gambling but won’t abandon their household”, Kim Se-Ji decides to devote her time for Jesus in 1893.
After W.J. Hall passed away, Kim Se-ji meets his noble missionary wife who pioneered the North Methodist Church, headquartered at the Namsan prefectural church. Due to her encounter with the Noble missionary wife, Kim Se-ji becomes proficient in Hangeul, memorizes the Bible and Christian doctrine, and becomes convinced of salvation. The name of Se-ji, which was obtained by baptism, is a transliteration of the Western-style named “Sadie” into Hanja.
Since 1898, Kim Se-ji has been a Bible woman and has been conducting evangelistic activities in Pyongyang and Hwanghae provinces, it is concluded that she had visited more than 2000 households every year and had sold a considerable amount of Christian books especially towards her intended audiences; Shamans and Korean geisha. Moreover, her passion to spread Christianity did not end there. She even looked for a funeral to attend which would meant that she would have be shrouded and participate in cleaning the deceased. However, in the Christian gospel, none of her work was labeled as lowly, and menacing. Although her husband passed away in the year of 1902, she maintained to spread further education for her three children and entrusted her soul to God by doing more of his kingdom’s work.

Kim Se-ji, who assisted Mrs. Noble and worked for the Church ministry of Namsan prefecture in Pyongyang and evangelism tour, organized the Protestants in 1903. It was three years after the Jeongdong First Church Protectorate was organized. In other word, Kim Se-ji was a woman with no previous experienced helped to lead the Protestants, her efforts at promoting women’s rights, relief work, and evangelism all at once. She also gathered a small amount of dues to build a prayer room and set up a prayer place where the gospel was not yet revealed.
Kim Se-ji, who became a widow during her youth sympathized greatly with other suffering widows. For this reason, in 1916, she organized a widow society so that “the abundant widows may gather their money to help the poor widows and to preach the gospel to them.”
In November 1919, Methodist and Presbyterian women in Pyongyang united to serve as deputy finance ministers when organizing the Korean Patriotic Women’s Association. They also aided the families of those who were imprisoned in the 3.1 movement and supported independence activists who are working overseas. In October 1920, the organization of the Patriotic Women’s Association which was against Japanese police officers was discovered and Kim Se-ji was arrested and forced to overcome torture and severe punishment. Kim Se-ji’s leadership, which was extended to the national movement, was once again demonstrated by rebuilding the Protestant that had been broken up by the 3.1 movement and in 1923, she raised the church with donated funds. Before the age of sixty in 1925, Kim Se-ji lived as an BiBle woman  for twenty-six years and resigned as a minister of evangelism.

 “I am grateful because with the knowledge that I have gained, I am able to identify God as the one who has caused the thousands of men and women to believe and hear the word of the Lord and the salvation of Christ Jesus.” The tears of Kim Se-ji were wiped off only when she was on the path of self-sacrifice. Not to mention that her path of self-sacrifice helped pioneer the church and an established protection camp. Most importantly, her sacrifice also shed a light on a national welfare for independence. For this reason, because of Kim Se-ji’s self-sacrifice, the missionary of women still stands.

1884년, 오하이오 연회 리벤나 지방의 제일연합감리교회의 여선교회 회원이었던 루시디아 볼드윈은 어둠 속에 살던 한국 여성들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 $88을 지정헌금하였습니다. 가족을 잃고 슬픔과 절망에 빠져 있던 볼드윈은 소망을 잃은 한국여성들의 삶에 대한 이야기를 듣고 남편의 재산을 정리하여 헌금하였습니다. 성경의 밀가루 반죽에 넣어진 누룩처럼, 한국여성을 향한 볼드윈의 헌신은 커다란 사랑이 되어 한국에 전해졌습니다.

1885년, 한국으로 파송을 받은 감리교 여선교사 매리 스크랜튼은 이 헌금으로 이화학당을 시작하였습니다. 한국여성들이 중심이 되어 절망 뿐인 한국이 소망을 회복할 수 있도록 여성들을 교육하였으며 현재의 이화여자대학교로 발전하여 여전히 영향력 있는 수많은 여성리더를 길러내고 있습니다.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

The National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.  

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
