Mission u, was held from July 21 through 23, by the Cal-Pacific Conference UMW with seventy-two Korean attendees and two speakers: Rev. Chang Min Lee (Spirituality Course) and Rev. Sun Hye Kim (Issue course), at Biola University. I was so thankful that God sent two speakers for the wonderful learning opportunity for this year's mission school. It was such a blessing and privilege for Cal-Pacific Conference KUMw Network that all attendees got a chance to have a Friday morning prayer together. This can be done because Mission u for Koreans by Cal-Pacific Conference KUMw Network usually started the program a day earlier unlike other regions. In addition, a special panel discussion of interest groups with pastors as an extension of spiritual course was well appreciated because it gave us new perspective on current issues as Christians.

Cal-Nevada Conference KUMw Mission u: The Image of God Bienvenidas!~ Greetings and welcome! From August 5th to 6th of 2016, I attended the Mission u, held at Merced UMC, marking one of the best decisions I have made thus far this year. The opening service of the Mission u was focused on “The Bible and Human Sexuality,” clearly and concisely setting the tone and theme for the rest of the events. A simple image relating the topic of the wheel of our theological task clarified misconceptions that I held regarding God, rather, establishing a more correct and truer image and understanding of God. In receiving a proper understanding of God, I realized the danger of misconceptions regarding God, which can influence all facets of life, from home-life, to workplace, and most importantly, my morality and values. This image revealed to me that the misconceptions and misunderstandings that I hold regarding other people as well. The theme, “The Bible and Human Sexuality,” is rooted in Genesis 1:27, in which the Scripture discusses the image of God. Reverend Kwon Hyuk In of the Open Door Church delivered a sermon on the passage, elaborating on the importance of being created in the image of God. In delivering this sermon, Pastor Kwon reminded me of this fact: that I am created in the image of God and all that this entails. The variances found across the different types of people, whether it is differences in race, or culture, or patterns of living, or so many other possible facets of being human, must be dealt with in a Christ-like manner. Through the seminar, the inspiration and the means to think about and ponder such things were permitted. An absence of thought regarding topics such as these leaves believers susceptible to falling into tradition, regardless of its alignment with God and His purpose, or to blindly accepting the opinions of others. The church must not fall into such traps and remain thoughtfully rooted in what Scripture reminds us. The lectures of Mission u also revealed to me the biases and prejudices of my hardened heart. This revelation inspired prayer, asking for repentance and pleading with the Holy Spirit to soften my heart and help me to be more open and accepting of those different from me. In praying this prayer and asking for a softened heart, I also realized that the first step of the missionary is to be accepting of the people to which he ministers. Holding prejudices against people severely limits the power of the Gospel; thus openness and acceptance are necessary markers of a God-fearing and successful missionary. The unwavering truth of God’s love and judgment was solidified and confirmed to me through Mission u. In the Garden of Eden, there existed two significant trees: the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, representing God’s love and judgment. This truth must be uncompromised and it is the duty of the church to uphold this truth. In hearing these words and receiving the truth, I was deeply blessed. Prior to Mission u, I was under the impression that the UMC was a proponent for gay marriage. However, through the lectures, I learned that the unwavering truth of God is at the foundation of the UMC beliefs, so the heaviness of my heart was relieved and a great joy replaced it. Reverend Samuel Hong of Santa Clara UMC spoke on “Latin America.” He had the congregation draw out the day to day breakdown of activities onto a paper plate. In completing the task, I realized that most of my day was spent in idle activity, causing me to feel embarrassment. This embarrassment was rooted in the lack of continuity in my spiritual practices. Rather than actively reading Scripture or praying, I would spent my time in rest or relaxation when I was too tired or unmotivated. In visually seeing this on the plate, I realized how I should properly spend my time to grow my spiritual life. Last year at Mission u, I learned of the history of Latin America and this year, I reviewed it. When I had first learned of the conditions of Latin America, I experienced great surprise and shock at pain and struggle marking the countries. However, through the passage of time, I had forgotten and in hearing again the history of Latin America, I was not only shocked at the status of the countries, but also at my forgetfulness. Though it had only been a year, I hadn’t thought about the struggle of the Latin American people since then. Liberation theology is properly tied to whole liberation, relating to the political, economical, spiritual, and physical realms of life. However, I realized that I was incorrectly understanding the movement. Ultimately, the gospel must impact all the realms of life, not just one facet of it. Also, this generation’s mission must be pouring into and growing institutions to impact entire people groups, rather than just going out and evangelizing to individuals. The emphasis must be placed on establishing foundations of faith to encourage and transform future generations of people. Through the fellowship experienced at Mission u, I was able to interact with other members, such as those whose faiths were more matured and developed than mine. Through these interactions, I was challenged to go on a mission trip. Though I was surrounded by familiar faces, I had never had the time to interact with most people. In talking with them about the topic of missions, I saw the sincerity in their faith and their love of God. The ease of conversation revealed to me the closeness made possible through Christian fellowship. This year’s Mission u was short. However, it was still a precious experience. The UMW was able to fervently know the passions behind mission. Finally, I want to experience thanks and gratitude to all those who made this year’s Mission u possible. All their prayers and efforts were fruitfully received. I wait in eager anticipation for next year’s Mission u. A las de Dios!~ Thank you and goodbye! |

New England Conference Korean UMw Mission u
On July 23, 2016, Mission "u" was held at Southern NH University. 40 people registered for this year's meeting. We were happy to see each other since the previous year. The theme was "Good Gifts that God has give Human Beings, Sexuality." The Reverend Jeong Hwan Kim of Central Methodist Church in Hampton, Connecticut was the leader this year. When the pastor learned of the theme this year he was a little worried about how he should approach the topic of sexuality. He was understandably shy to have to speak about this subject to a group of women. Rev. Kim said "Sexuality is a misunderstood subject. Most people perceive it as taboo. Even I was uncomfortable with how to teach about sexuality." The Rev. Kim asked the people how we can define the Bible as one word. We answered love, obedience and so on, but he said the word that best define the bible is "relationship". And the misunderstanding of sexuality came from broken relationships. During the group discussion we shared heartbreaking stories of relationships with each other. We learned new things through the presentation of the other groups. It touched our heart when one church member shared with us that she regretted making her husband feel alone. We felt we could have been better wives if had known this before. But rather then regret we can remember the quote "Start now, Start today, start in this room, Start with friends in Christ." We know that miracles are not mysterious or impossible to achieve. A miracle is a small or large thing that can make a massive difference in someone's life. We know that the Lord has told us to treat ourselves with compassion, not violence. We learned to love ourselves and our bodies too. After Mission "u"... This miracle takes place in us. (Written: Jae Sook Lee, New England Conference KUMw Network Mission Team, North Boston KUMC) |

North Georgia Mission U
From July 22 to the 30th, Mission u was held at the Fayetteville United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, GA. During these two days, 200 women gathered for Bible School, 40 of whom were Korean-American. This Mission U was led by Sang Lee, Associate Pastor at Atlanta Korean United Methodist Church. His lesson was entitled “Claiming God’s Good Gift (The Bible and Human Sexuality)”. His message taught us what the bible says and teaches in regards to homosexuality. As Christians, these topics are extremely sensitive issues, but I thought it was enlightening.

On June 18, 2016, the 22nd annual Cal-Nevada Conference Korean UMw Network worship festival was held at Santa Clara United Methodist Church. All glory and honor belong to our God, who granted the privilege and possibility to hold such an event. With one heart, the members of the congregation gathered to worship God, allowing the worship festival to begin. The sermon shared by the pastor dealt with leading a life of worship, praising God eternally through a life of both prayer and thankfulness. In the midst of the gathering, through the performances and the worship, the greatness of God’s love and grace was passionately placed onto our hearts, filling us with conviction and thankfulness. The efforts of the various churches that worked tirelessly and endlessly to prepare their praise, dance, and performances was not put to waste, as the second part of the worship festival began and the routines began. First up in the festival were the pastors and their wives, who led worship, calling the congregation to praise in a zealous and fervent manner, inviting the Holy Spirit to dwell in the midst of the gathering. Tears of gratitude toward a holy and worthy God fell from the faces of the participants as the offerings of praise, performance, musical accompaniments, and dance were lifted up to God. The presence of the Holy Spirit was felt throughout, from body to mind, filling us with conviction, as well as with God’s grace and love. The worship festival brought roughly 300 people to the church, uniting all the members as one body serving to bring glory to God. The joyful festival will certainly last forever in the hearts and minds of its participants, remaining as a pleasant memory of God’s provision and goodness. This speaks to the power of the Holy Spirit. The limitless nature of God’s grace, as well as the pouring out of the Holy Spirit was made evident through this worship; embedded deep into the hearts and minds of the participants the reminder to forever praise and honor God. It is our hope and prayer that in response to the festival and the outpouring of the Spirit, the saving grace of Jesus Christ and the redeeming love of God the Father will be made evident through our lives as living testimonies to His goodness. We strive to live each day lifting up praise and glory to God in everything we do. Thank you, Lord! (Written by Mandy Tuggle, Cal-Nevada Conference Korean UMw Network President) |
