Delaware-Baltimore Conference Mission u On the first Saturday of August, the Delaware-Baltimore UMW held Mission u. The first topic of sexual identity was an issue that we had been widely discussing in our daily lives and endlessly worrying about. I was thankful for this opportunity to deeply think, learn, and share about this topic, and I was able to organize my thoughts about it. In particular, my favorite part was when we looked up Bible verses that specifically indicate how God wants us to live, and we talked about examples of when people misuse Bible passages just as Satan used words from the Bible to tempt Jesus. Because of this, my vague thoughts became solidified and I became confident that I could teach what I had learned here to other people. At Mission u, not only did we share our own thoughts with others in our group in order to organize and renew our own beliefs, but through the presentations of other groups we also heard of new ideas that our own group had never thought of, which was fun because it gave me an opportunity to be more fulfilled. It’s true what they say, that there is no end to learning. Our second topic was global climate justice, something that has been discussed previously many times at Mission u or other leaders’ seminars. Every time I learn about it, I work really hard to take small steps to preserve the environment on this earth in which our children must continue to live. But as time passes, I somehow gradually fade back to living in a way that is convenient for me and end up not being able to live out the resolutions that I made to myself. This was a valuable opportunity for me where I could reevaluate the way I've lived my life thus far in relation to the earth, the environment, and the world that our children will inherit. No matter how many times these things are stressed to us, it is never too much. With that in mind, I began again to pay attention to the little ways in which I can save energy. I’m so thankful. Through the opportunity that is Mission u, I love learning new things, being reminded of what I’ve learned in the past, and finding growth; but I also really love meeting good people through the UMW. Every time we meet, the other members always greet us like reunited family members and always give us their best. They make the trip fun and memorable and make me look forward to the next time we meet. (Written: Haiwon Jung, Baltimore Eden Korean United Methodist Church) |
It was truly a privilege for me to attend the Mission u at the annual conference. Attending this conference was a new experience for me to step outside my church walls and hear the issues going on in the world. At first, I did not know how to get to the meeting location, however thankfully, received a ride from a neighboring church van. Through this ride, I was able to mingle with other believers in Christ. Once we arrived, we were greeted by smiling faces at the registration table and received instructions and materials. Then we headed to the cafeteria to eat breakfast, where we continued to get to know others and hold fellowship. Before heading into worship, my heart was opening with a joyful readiness to receive more of God.

I attended Western Regional Leadership Seminar for 2 days from August 12th through 13th, which was sponsored by the NUMW from Wilshire UMC in Los Angeles. Approximately 45 members from Northern California, Southern California and Colorado attended the seminar. The seminar was full of God's grace, which we felt while meeting each other and learning about women's mission. On the first day, we spent time with all of members to get to know each other. In addition we had an opportunity to learn about UMW organization, the mission of UMW, the NNKUMW Mission statement, and how to utilize the UMW's resources. On the second day, we learned and shared our thoughts about "Action Plan: Open Space Technology, Facilitating meetings, Public Speaking, and Sharing Our Future Visions." Through this seminar, I learned that the UMW is not just a small group of women serving their own churches. During this very short seminar, I gained new insights about the UMW. I experienced an unforgettable sensation of enlightenment when the guest speakers spoke about each topics. Especially during the History of UMW's session, I was amazed by many the women in mission carrying Mary Scranton's passion and sacrifice of missionary work started in Korea. Needless to say, I am thankful again for their love and passion in mission. When I attended a session of Women's Mission History, I thought about UMW being an advocate in developing and cultivating new leaders who will influence the world by spreading God's messages. I praise and thank the NNKUMW for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful organization. Through this seminar, I confirmed that Jesus ordered me to carry on his mission/calling as Matthew 28:19-20 states. It is an embarrassing testimony that I was a Christian seeking my own comfort all the time. At the end of this seminar, I had re-gained my passion about not only women in mission but myself as a tool for God. I have no doubt that the UMW 's future is bright and will continuously grow through endless trainings and developmental programs. I thank all of the NNKUMW committee members for providing this valuable seminar which left me with the highest hopes and dreams of our UMW in the future of this world.
From August 12 to 13, for two days and one night, the West Coast Women’s Mission Leadership Training took place at the Wilshire Korean United Methodist Church in Los Angeles, California. With the impending pressure and incredibly short amount of time to prepare, I carried with me a burden of knowing that I had yet to accomplish so many tasks back home. With this complicated feelings, I participated in the training sessions. Through the warm and friendly welcomes of the Wilshire UMC members, as well as the delicious lunch provided by the church and the session and worship led by Choi Mi Ran Samonim, the complicated feelings I carried in my heart began to untangle and I opened up to the experience. By the means of God’s grace moving in the midst of the congregation, I left the pressures and the burdens that I had felt at the beginning of the trip in the hands of God. This year’s West Coast Women’s Mission Leadership Training’s theme was “Peace and Feminity.” In particular, there was an emphasis on public speaking and leadership, with many members expressing deep interest in the discussion and conversation, allowing for a blessed time for all. We studied the structure, history, and the current efforts of the Women’s Mission team. The history of the organization finds its roots in Mary Scranton of the American city of Ravenna, Ohio, who was the first female missionary to Korea in 1884. She received $88.00 of support from the church of Baldwin to aid her in her missionary process. Scranton founded the Lee Hwa Women’s University. In 1897, Josephine Campbell was also sent to Korea and she founded Bae Hwa Girls’ High School. Through the efforts of these two women, many more institutions of raising female leadership were established, including churches and schools. From these institutions, an evangelical program directed specifically at women was also established, setting the foundation of many Korean churches. The current state of female spiritual faith is a result of the relentless effort, blood, sweat, and tears of the female missionaries who came before us, paving the path for us today. In remembering this, we must be mindful of the struggles and the tribulations of these women and repent before God for the complaints and protests we express, despite how easy we have it in comparison to the women who came before us. The woman who deals with the general affairs of the Korean Women’s Missions Organization, named Pastor Kim Myung Rae, led bible studies, split into first session and second session. The theme was “My Life Revisited,” and I was deeply blessed through these sessions. I was able to reconsider the purpose and values of my life, realizing that God desires to work through and receive glory from women. Pastor Kim was a powerful and concise speaker, expressing God’s love passionately. Through her words, I was able to understand and recognize the power of the Holy Spirit. Similarly, her words stirred desire in me to participate in the world mission, taking part in the spread of God’s word. In response, I prayed for the ability to participate and for a never-ending passion for this mission. I was able to experience the truth that God is truly with me. All of the 40 people who were present at the conference were able to worship, experience God, and hold fellowship alongside fellow believers. I want to express thanks and gratitude toward the women who worked tirelessly in the hot kitchen, despite the heat of the summer. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” (Psalm 107:1) (Written: Yeon Ok Park, Open Door Church, Cal-Nevada Conference) |
