Harriet Olson UMW

What is NNKUMW National Leadership Training?
As president of UMW at my local church Bell Memorial UMC, I was to attend the National Leadership Training. I had an obligation to attend due to my new position, but also deep in my heart my curiosity was stirred and I questioned what this training was. I wanted to find out and to do that I needed to go and see. It began early in the morning 5:15 AM at our church parking lot. Two other women from my local UMW and I received blessing from Reverend Nak In Kim before leaving for LAX. It took us about six hours fly to arrive in Nashville, Tennessee and we landed into the Scarritt- Bennett Center, which was built in 1924-1927, we found ourselves in a beautiful antique buildings surrounded by well- maintained trees and gardens. That first day felt cozy under the late afternoon autumn sky.
Wow! Women Power and Togetherness!! From New York, New Jersey, Delaware, N. Georgia, New England, Cal-Pacific, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Nevada, 178 UMW members got together. I never felt this amazing power from the local church. Everyone here was committed to empower each other by learning together and getting trained by whatever was prepared in front of us the next four days. For me, each member was like Eve whom God created and said, “It is very good”. Each woman here was experiencing freedom just as stated in the Purpose of UMW. All these thoughts made me appreciate myself as a woman and thankful to God. It made me say, “YES!” to Him if He ever calls me for his purpose.
This event is scheduled every two years. The purpose is to educate female lay members of the church to develop their leadership so that they can go back to their local church and practice what they learned. It was an eye opening experience to see so many resources and meet many valuable individuals. I had been a member of UMW for 32 years and it was a shame that I did not know more and was never deeply involved in this well-organized and historical institution. Through this education and training UMW members could work with same mind, same vision, and same passion. The 178 members at this training could now spread to 800, 000 members all over the world. This UMW spirit and practice made me feel renewed in my mind as a United Methodist Women.
The theme of this year’s training was “Peace & Women’s Community”. Reverend Hye Sun Kim gave us a lecture from Matthew 13:1-9 (Me as a seed of peace), Ephesians:1-6(Community making peace), and Roman 15:13 (How to make peace). There were two other reverends, Kim Kwang Tae and Kwon Hyuck In. They gave a sermon about Women Community, Justice, Love & Life. There were 14 workshops covering various areas such as UMW Mission History, UMw network, participation in society, racism, prison ministry and lay women missionaries. There were also 13 different small groups with about 15 people in each group. During small group, we discussed how to personalize what we were learning. At the very beginning, Harriet Olson, the chief executive officer of UMW spoke about UMW current issues. One highlight was how the UMW first presented the issue of Korean Comfort Women to United Nations. UMW did a lot of groundwork by gathering a great deal of data from interviews and the media. Besides this, UMW also helped to solve the conflict in Congo with surrounding countries by sending women missionaries to the Congolese women. They sent women missionaries to Africa, Russia and the Middle East to teach and equip women serve their own communities.
Women can do things that men cannot do. More precisely speaking, women communities are often better equipped to address issues like peace and indeed communities of women have been successful. Our God calls us to make the world a better place. Who will face the conflict and take action? We are called to make a better world for our future generations. As women in the UMW, we should respond and follow our Lord’s calling.

“Seed money” was planted two years ago...
At the Korean United Methodist Women’s National Leadership Training(NLT) in Nashville two years ago, I was given the opportunity to attempt a hypothetical mission project called “Mission in the midst of international students,” and I was greatly challenged by the “seed money” in the amount of $1000 that was offered to me by 7 motivated members of my small group. The reason for being challenged was that I was in serious financial difficulty and the money was very attractive. Nevertheless, there was a gentle but very firm voice inside me which led me to pray, “may God take total control over my will, and grant me guidance.”
Coincidentally, I happened to find a job at the bank shortly after the incident. I have become the only Korean bank clerk in the Boston area, and I based my work place as my mission field from then on. As I encountered all kinds of Koreans in various statuses & situations through my work place, I could bestow upon them what I have learned at the  NNKUMw National Leadership Training. At the same time, I was being well trained to manage money as well in the line of my new career. So I started my mission project by depositing the $1000 in my savings account.
My husband and I invited people we meet at all kinds of social activities to serve & share the food together at our home using the 10% of the “seed money” once every two months or so to be continued. Having fellowships with Christians and non-Christians over food, I noticed, helps a great deal in sharing the good news to each other directly and indirectly. I’ll gladly continue to do so. I’ve learned, to plant the seed in as far as what God commanded and to be expected. However, to grow is based on the absolute divine power of God the Father. The thought of those seven donators from the small group in Nashville, fills my heart with a strong desire to continue to save more and spread the good news with the “seed money.”
Halfway through, the time to register for the next NNKUMw NLT came again.
I’ve wished and prayed for a guide, to be able to share the experiences in spiritual recuperation and hope of joy with everyone in the Women’s ministry of my church as well.
Since much of the congregation of my church is a younger crowd and of a low-income bracket, many are facing financial difficulties, so it came as quite of burden to decide to join the conference trip. Therefore, I discussed the issue with my small group leader Miran Choi, and we decided to turn the seed money as a subsidy for the application fees during registration.
As a result, the participants were increased by 50% this year. Half of the participants including myself received the benefit of the subsidy. I have no doubt but the power of God will move through these six people, to bring out the brilliance of His kingdom. Moreover, my church has decided to grant subsidies for those who wish to participate in the NNKUMw NLT Conference in the future. There are so many more potential participants standing by for the next one!
Throughout the past two years, I have noticed that God had disciplined me to be bold in my tasks under any circumstances. Furthermore, I gained a stronger faith through these experiences. God has used me as pathway for our Vision Grace UMC to have interests and concerns. Additionally, prayer has been a guiding light for my growth in maturity as a woman of faith.

I testify God planted the seed of the good news in my heart, to be strengthened both physically and spiritually through this experience and knowledge with the NNKUMw National Leadership Training. I thank everyone with love and support in prayers, especially for the seven members of my small group, those who offered me assistance in times of difficult finances, and those who believed in God to work through one like me to help touch my heart so deeply and that led me to take courage in managing this ministry. I thank all for the love, care, support, and prayers. It was one of the greatest privileges for me to offer and contribute my best to be confirmed as follower of Jesus. And most importantly, I give thanks to God and the glory of one who is worthy of praise!

Our Peace Story

We always cry out.
We want peace!
We need peace!
But the unbelief and greed deep down in our heart
And with bitter wounds
In a whirlwind of endless conflict
We struggle.

There are moments of peace that stay for a while.

Sound of gentle breeze
Shining evening stars
The western sky drenched in the setting sun
The breath of the Creator we feel in the midst of it all…
Peace in the beauty and greatness of nature…

But the peace of that Shalom that truly fills my life
Where can I find it?

Someone says
Now I am so peaceful at this moment.
Time to attend the National Network of Korean United Methodist Women’s Leadership training by leaving home
Putting down all the worries about the family and the troubles of the world that filled my head
The time that is full of expectations and excitements of what the Lord will fill up with
In an empty head and empty heart.
A happy peace filled up my heart.

Someone else says.
The cross before the altar,
The place where the light of life shines brightly.
Time to kneel and wait for the Lord
Time to wait
Expecting His warmth and soft voice
“Put down fear and pain…”
The words which I hear in my mind
The time to lay down and entrust to the Lord
The surging wave of peace!

There is another confession.
The Lord loves me who is nobody
That grace, that love!
The love of Lord that overflows in me
It flows out beyond me.

Shalom! What do you look like?

Sometimes a small candle
Sometimes burning firewood with a red glow
Melting the frozen hearts
Lighting
The fire of hope in their hearts

As low as ever
Empty myself under the cross and empty again
When I fill myself with the sufferings of the Lord
One stepping stone bridge made for you.

One corner stone thrown into this generation, in this place
Rough shape, ugly color
A worthless ugly little stone
But if kicked by an angry man’s foot, it becomes something to vent anger out
And it will become a small water stopper
To stop a huge stream of water like a large dam.

Ah! Although it may not be a tremendous and great work
We can now do something for peace
We have confidence

Because when reaching out to the light of the Lord
Through the dark night
From everything full of
Pain and thorns like thistles

Your pains
Become our pains
Your tears
Become our tears
Your joy
Becomes our joy
And your hope
Becomes our hope.

Peace begins from the "Peace Store."

Peace begins from the "Peace Store."
But there are many people.
Can they live in harmony without
              disputes?
Peace is God's presence from heavens,
             a gift from God.
Peace is walking humbly with God,
             obeying God's will.
   an effort to recover relationships.
Peace is a relationship in harmony,
      based on love,
      harmony through hearts.

Peace is a fruit of the seed
        given from God
that I want to hold on
        till my last breath.

The 14th Annual Praise Night

The 14th annual praise night was held on September 17th at the First United Methodist Church in Flushing (FUMC). About 250 people of all ages from across the New York conference gathered together during this beautiful fall evening to worship and to hold a praise night. It is our privilege as children of God to worship and to praise Him, and to experience His grace and healing power.

Pastor Chong Ho Kim of the FUMC gave the sermon titled the “Victory of the Holy War.”  I believe that we as Christians are participants in this Holy War, and although we take part in it, it is our God who leads this war into victory. Therefore, we are gathered together with one voice and one mind to express our love for Him through praise, which is a beautiful act. Also, praising Him is not just through singing songs, but this gathering had a greater meaning that resonates with the Bible Women mission for women, children and youth in Asia.

After having a delicious dinner prepared for by the First UMW of the church, we gathered in the sanctuary to prepare our mind and spirit to worship God by singing songs, led by the praise team of the church. It is here that we are prepared to open our hearts and be ready to receive God’s grace and blessing. When we are gathered together we would worship first.  Therefore, we dedicate our hearts to God through the worship and then begin our praise program. We proceeded with the 14th annual praise night with 8 participating churches, with a variety of music including a children’s choir, men’s ensemble, duet, solos by a mezzo soprano, a tenor, praise songs from each of the churches’ choirs, and a special presentation of “Arumdaun (Beautiful) mission dance of Korean drums.” The beautiful melodies of the songs have warmed our hearts and brought tears to our eyes as a joyful expression on our face.  When each group finished their performance, they were met with loud applause and cheers which filled the whole sanctuary. If we can receive much excitement from this praise event I wondered how God would have felt to see our best expressions of praise to Him through our motion and voices. Oh, how great would it be if this time would last forever! It is our hope that day will come soon, but for now we wait for next year. We ended the annual praise night with the benediction from Pastor Jong Bum Lee of Marn-Baeksung UMC.

It is my sincere appreciation to the participating churches, their pastors, members and business owners who made this 14th annual praise night possible. I also give special thanks to Rev Chong Ho Kim and the local unit of the United Methodist Women at the FUMC in Flushing for their accommodation and hospitality.

Missionaries… Supporters...

Under a clear and sunny autumnal sky, the Northern California United Methodist Women’s Organization held their Walk-A-Thon on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 10am at Lake Chabot Park in Castro Valley, CA. After a hot and sweltering summer, the welcoming cool and gentle wind of autumn was greeted with a service of worship and the Word.

The reverend from Oakland Korean United Methodist Church, Reverend Kang Won Lee, spoke on Acts 1:8, connecting it to the history of the Methodist Church and the Women’s ministry. In taking in the sermon, we were made to realize the mission work that was made possible through God’s love and guidance.

In particular, a few female missionaries were introduced and the sacrifices of the women who aided in the day to day of their pilgrimages were shared, stirring conviction in our hearts.

One of the events that the Northern California United Methodist Women’s Organization holds is the Walk-A-Thon, which involves God’s holy mission work and missionaries. In particular, much like the historic Joseon female, there are modern Asian women who are in need of aid and ministering to them is the work of the Women’s Asia Evangelism ministry. Supporting and partaking in this ministry produced in me great joy.

Though we cannot all go out and serve the nations in person, participating in the ministry today and supporting the missionaries who go out through our donations was a reason to give praise and thanks to our gracious and loving Father.

One step at a time…
In thinking about the Women’s Asia Evangelism ministry, each footstep brought more joy as the hope of the spread of the Gospel filled in me.

Thanks to the delicious and bountiful lunch prepared and provided by the Oakland Korean United Methodist Church’s members, our hunger was satisfied and conversations of love were shared in fellowship and community. The beauty of the Women’s ministry was made evident in the midst of it all.

With an obedience to the Word and a commitment to prayer, we lifted up today to the Lord. We believe that God will bless all of the events and ministries that the Northern California Women’s Organization holds, so that His glory is made clear to all.

John Wesley and the Women in the Methodist Movement

John Wesley was born in 1703 in 웹윌즈, England.  He was the 15th child of 19 under the father Samuel Wesley, who was an Episcopal minister, and mother
Susanna Wesley. Susanna disciplined her children under a very strict and systematic   spiritual life when raising her children. During the evenings before bedtime, she made a schedule for each child to listen to their struggles and have conversations with.
Every Thursday evening was John Wesley’s time with his mother. Even after he became an adult, he longed for those times.
While also raising her children under a pious life, Suzanna opened her home to the women around town and led home-meetings in her kitchen when Sunday afternoon services were not held. She offered prayers for the families, read Sunday sermons, led conversations on the life journey of faith, and offered pious book reading programs. There were 200 people that attended from her parish. Even when woman were not allowed to lead religious meetings, she radically carried her ministry. It was Suzanna Wesley who started the church’s woman mission movement of the Methodist Church in England from her kitchen. She was a respected leader although there were some issues with her leading as a woman amongst Samuel Wesley’s church members. At the same time, with Suzanna’s help Samuel Wesley could stay in one parish for a long period of time.
Suzanna’s practices in ministry influenced John Wesley greatly. He appointed women as leaders of small group meetings of his Methodist movement and allowed women to recite his sermons at public gatherings. There were many women leaders who participated with John Wesley in the Methodist movement; spiritual supporter,  the first model for Methodist women preacher Mary , Methodist non official woman preacher Sarah Crosby, financial supporter Lady Maxwell, Elizabeth Baltimore and Methodist woman circuit preacher Anne Rogers.
When Sarah Crosby became a young widow living without any hope, she attended a small group meeting led by a young minister John Wesley, who was an ordained minister of the Church of England. She was moved by his sermon and began her prison ministry. She regularly visited the place where the government had no interest and ministered to the prisoners awaiting the death penalty by reading sermons of John Wesley’s and prayed for them. This led to the spiritual movement within the prison of repenting their wrong deeds and receiving Jesus Christ as their savior. Finally she passed away from a contagious disease from the prison. At her funeral service, John Wesley said that Sarah Crosby was one of the most sincere Methodists who returned to heaven after all her work. By embracing her life and keeping her faith all the way to the end of her life she carried her faith by helping and leading people to the Lord.
At that time in England, the industrial revolution impacted people’s lives.
Economically there was a great gap between the rich and the poor, and the exploitation of a child labor was a common practice. The women who were trained under John Wesley acted upon their callings by visiting poor families, establishing Sunday Schools, and leading small group meetings.
Many historians admit that the result of the Methodist movement under the leadership of John Wesley, with his emphasis on the spirituality of the individual and the society, saved many from the blood shed of revolution in the country, which happened in France.
In Wesley’s time, women’s status was to marry, stay home, and take care of the household by having children and raising them. But those women who responded to their calls and acted upon their faith overcame the religious and cultural barriers of their time, and participated in the history of God’s mission.

Esther Hong, Pioneer of the Christian Women’s Movement

After Korea was liberated from Japanese rule in 1947, the Women’s Society took back its previous name, the Women’s Missionary Society. Esther Hong became its president and tried to restructure and revive the organization. She expressed her determination as its member in the Methodist Report as following:
“I pray for the health of missionary members whom I love dearly. I know you are working hard on the frontline of mission, scattered here and there yet united in one purpose.  My prayers go out to all of you who are helping church and spreading the gospel to 30 million Koreans. I know that you do not work to get honor or recognition for yourself. In fact, you have sacrificed your self-interest and honor. Let us not forget the beauty of our ministry, and continue to serve our church. This is the mission that God had entrusted to us.”
It is important to note that the message quoted above can indisputably predict how Esther Hong, elected as the president at the first gathering of Women’s Missionary Society at Jeongdong Church, devoted her twenty years of life to the organization.
Esther Hong was born as the eldest daughter of Jung Woo Hong and Mary Han in 1892. Esther Hong accepted Christian faith early under the influence of her father. He was a politician and social activist of the independent association. Esther attended Ehwa School. After graduating from Ewha Junior School (equivalent to today’s high school) in 1912, she became a primary school teacher at Ewha Elementary School. She entered Ehwa College in 1917.
While still in college, she organized a “seven-people evangelism group,” and went on an evangelistic journey around the country during summer vacation in 1920. Before they took off to the national pilgrimage, they made a white banner with a red cross around it. They also formed an evangelist band that sang hymns. "We are all soldiers of the cross, we will march to proclaim the kingdom of Christ, and we will march with the gospel in our hand..." The grief and strong patriotism of the young people who lost their country were resonated in the lyrics of the hymns they sang.
In June of 1920, the “seven-people evangelism group,” started its first trip to Pyongyang, and initiated door-to-door evangelism during the day. Furthermore, the group visited farmers who worked in the fields and held meetings at the elementary school when the sun was down. Although they were welcomed by many, the surveillance and interruption of the Japanese police were persistent. And after a month, the evangelistic trip had to stop. However, the effort to increase the presence of Methodist women in various locations did succeed. Even though the evangelistic trip was short-lived, it had a great harvest of over five hundred new believers.
After graduating from Ewha College in 1922, Esther Hong made her way to study abroad in the United States. After graduating from the Department of Theology at the Scarritt Bennett College, in Tennessee, she returned to Korea in 1926. She became the first female professor at the Methodist Theological Seminary in 1926. At the same time, her full-fledged adventure for the women’s movement started.
In 1927, she became the president of the YWCA, the Korean Christian Youth Association, and led a central executive committee when Geun-woo-ae, the anti-Japanese Women’s Movement Body, started. After the March 1st Movement, Esther Hong, who had participated in the education and wide-ranging women’s movements, was elected as the first president of the Christian Korean Methodist Women’s Missionary Society which embraced both the North and South Women’s Missionary Society.

As the Christian Korean Methodist Church was established, the ordination of the female pastor was allowed. As a result, fourteen female missionaries became ordained ministers in 1931. The next year, ten more female missionaries were ordained. Although at the time the only Korean woman to be assigned as an ordained minister was Esther Hong, she gave up the ordination after marrying a YMCA activist, Myung-won Lee. It certainly would not have been easy to be married and be active in the ministry because the tradition at that time distinctly stated that the clergy should have no responsibility for family.
When Esther Hong was the first president of the Women’s Missionary Society, Japanese imperialism began to suppress the Korean church while preparing for war. In 1941, as a pro-Japanese Christian Korean Methodist Church was established, the meeting of the Women’s Missionary Society was dissolved. This annual meeting of regional representatives of Women's Missionary Society corresponds to the National Women's Assembly of today. Instead of these meetings, the United Women's Division was created in the denomination, and the Women's Missionary Society was changed to a Women’s Society. However, most of the activities stopped with the outbreak of the war between US and Japan.
The Women’s Missionary Society suffered in the turmoil of Korean society after independence. It came under the umbrella of Women’s Society and Esther Hong became its executive director. Right after the Korean war, the organization resumed its business in Pusan and made efforts to establish an autonomous position. As recorded above, the National Federation of Women’s Missionary Society went through many hurdles to be what it is today.
Esther Hong was the first Korean female professor at Methodist Theological Seminary and a pioneer in the Korean Christian women's movement. Since it is the 120th Anniversary of Methodist Women’s Missionary Society, it is truly meaningful to look back on her steadfast devotion.

“Evening Prayers”
Author: Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt

Modern people’s lives are very busy. Sometimes they are busy rushing about without knowing what they are busy with. Although it is true that the invention of electricity has brought convenience to human life beyond words, people now live by moving restlessly until late at night by extending “daytime” as much as possible through the power of electricity. As a result, it became unthinkable for them to eat dinner with their family and have an evening prayer together to thank for the day.
Unless they are firm in their hearts and have strong spiritual habits, they will rarely give the time to face God. A day that is pushed out of time, pushed to work, becomes one month, becomes one year, and flows away after so many years.

The author of this book, Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt, has put together a compilation of evening prayers. He explains how blessed we are in that time spent reflecting and in thanks for the day by praying quietly to God. He also stresses how we must entrust each day to the guidance of God after a day’s work.

These prayers are written for evening prayers, but they are good prayers to meditate at any time of the day. This is a book is a short, 365 prayers; one for every day of the year. You will be able to live in heavenly peace under God’s guidance in this busy and complex life by listening to His voice, when you read the brief bible verses first and then read and meditate through evening prayer.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

The National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
