유엔 세미나를 다녀와서

"평화와 여성" 이란 주제로 한인여선교회 전국연합회에서 주관하는 유엔세미나를 참석하고 왔다.

지정된 호텔에서 아침을 먹고, 문밖을 나오면, 후러싱 교회의 차량봉사자들이 기다리는 차속으로 몸을 옮겨, 후러싱 제일교회 교육관 Vision Center, 약 15분 거리를 오가며, 잘 짜여진 프로그램을 참석하고, 시간마다 준비된 식사를 하고, 신나는 음악에 맞춰 몸찬양을 하고, 또 비전센터를 떠나, 호텔로 와서, 따뜻한 샤워를 하고, 잠들기전 하루를 마무리하는 기도를 드린후, 편안한 침대에 누우면 된다. 나는 모든것이 이미 계획되고, 준비된대로 평화의 방법을 수동적으로 따르기만 하면되었다.

평화를 위한 연합감리교회의 역할과, 유엔 세계 여성지위에 대한 위원회를 통해 유엔 안전보장 이사회 결의안 1325이 채택되었음을 알았고, UN Tour 를 했고, UN 바로 건너편에 위치한 CCUN에서 하는 일들을 구체적으로 듣고 배웠다.

필라델피아에서 23년을 도시 빈민 사역과 평화 공동체를 하시는 이태후 목사님께서는 영적, 심리적, 사회적, 생태적 네가지 샬롬이 충족되어야 진정한 의미에서 샬롬이 이루어진다고 하셨다. 브루더호프 공동체에서 유일한 한인가정으로 살아가는 박성훈/최순옥성도님께서는, 모든 것을 다 함께 공유하고 나누는, 그들이 사는 평화의 방법에 대해, 그 공동체가 운영하는 출판사에서 낸 책들을 나누었다.

이용보 강사목사님께선 "요한 웨슬리의 평화" 를 말씀해주셨고, 장위현 강사목사님께서는 성경에 나타난 "하나님의 평화" 에 대해 말씀해주셨다. 폐회예배와 성만찬을 참여함으로써 4박 5일의 일정을 마쳤다.

이 모든 과정 역시, 나는 모든것이 이미 계획되고, 준비된대로 평화의 방법을 수동적으로 따르기만 하면되었다. 이제까지의 모든 일정을 통해 단순히 수동적인 자세에서 평화의 의미를 배우고 들었다면, 과연 진정한 의미의 평화란 어떤것인가? 미국에서 살아가는 나에게 평화의 의미는 지금 내가 있는 곳, 내가 지금 이시간에도 누리고 있는 아주 자연스럽고, 지극히 당연한 것이어서, 별다른 어려움을 못느끼는 익숙한것으로 다가온다. 하지만 나에게는 지극히 당연하고 익숙한 환경이, 이 지구 어느곳에 있는 어떤 여성들에게는 상황에 따라 그 뜻 이 달라지는 경우가 너무도 비일비재한것을 이번 유엔 세미나를 통해서 알았다.

전쟁과, 기근과, 빈곤과, 편견과 박해와 차별이 계속되는 지금, 진정한 의미의 평화는 어디에서도 보기 힘들다. 알고 보면 내가 사용하는 말의 의미와 다른 사람이 의미하는 바가 줄곧 달랐을 수도 있다는 것이다. 그것은 하나님의 평화와는 현저히 다르다. 많은것을 배울수있는 귀한 시간이었다. 진정한 의미의 평화를 위하여, 주님이 나에게 요구하는 것은 무엇인가?

After Attending the UN Seminar

             I attended the UN seminar entitled “Women and Peace,” sponsored by the NNKUMW, from October 12-15, 2016. Everything was well planned; our lodging, transportation to and from the Vision Center of the First UMC of Flushing, and each meal prepared for us to enjoy.  All I had to do was follow the schedule.
I learned so much through this well thought-out program. I learned about the UMW’s role in training women as peacemakers and decision-makers, as well as the role of the CCUN and its purpose.  I also learned about Resolution 1325 adopted by the UN Security Council.  A part of the program included a tour of the UN building that everyone enjoyed very much.
Each day we had a bible study led by Rev. Wee Hyun Chang on “God’s Peace,” within the bible. In addition to the reverend, we listened to guest speakers each day, speaking on how to live as God's peaceful people. On the first day, Rev. Yong Bo Lee spoke about John Wesley and his understanding of peace. The next day, Rev. Tae Hoo Lee, from Philadelphia, spoke about his ministry, which has focused on forming a peaceful community in the inner city neighborhoods for the past 24 years. He focused on four examples of peace: spiritual, psychological, social, and ecological peace. To embody these four tenets of peace would be to embody shalom.
On the last day we had two guests, husband and wife, Sung Hoon Pak and Soon Ok Choi, from the Bruderhof Community. This Korean family lives an incredibly unique life in a community that shares everything, and has experienced the real meaning of a peaceful life through Christ. Upon the completion of their presentation, the five day seminar ended with a closing worship and communion.
During this “Peace Seminar” I questioned myself, “what is the real meaning of peace?” My only perspective of peace comes from my idyllic life here in the United States. However, living in a peaceful environment is not really peaceful living. I learned to have perspective in that my peace does not end at the border, but extends to people who are affected by war and other forms of oppression. As long as war, poverty, famine, prejudice, persecution, and discrimination continue in this world, we are not experiencing peace in living. We should be thankful of our peacefulness and safety, but we should not be ignorant, it is obviously not what God wants from us in genuine peaceful living. 
The entire UN seminar was a valuable experience and allowed me to learn in depth about peace.  I question myself now, “What does the Lord demand of me to achieve true peaceful living?” I believe the answer lies in the words of the prophet Isaiah (32:17), paraphrased, "peace comes out of justice, for the end of justice is peace."

한인여선교회 전국연합회 유엔세미나

올해 10년 만에 열린 감리교 한인 여선교회 주관 UN Seminar는 “평화와 여성”이라는 주제로 “나 자신과 평화”, “타인과 평화”, “자연과 평화”, 그리고 “하나님과 평화”를 통해 우리 여성들이 어떻게 나 자신과 가정, 교회와 지역사회, 나아가 세계평화와 한반도의 평화 통일에 대한 문제를 성서적으로 배우고 이해하며, 우리의 삶에 구체적으로 적용 시킬 수 있는 방법들을 함께 고민하고자 미 전역에서 70여 명의 여선교회 회원들이 뉴욕에 모였습니다.

감리교의 기본교리인 요한 웨슬리의 평화를 배우며 화평케 하는 자의 역할과 심령이 가난한 자의 성품을 생각해보고 매 순간 하나님과의 동행을 통한 관계의 회복, 용서를 통해 우리가 이 땅 위에 온전한 평화를 가져올 수 있는 방법을 성서적으로 생각해보는 시간을 시작으로 세계평화의 수호자 역할을 하는 UN을 방문하여 여러 가지 UN 프로그램을 배우고 UN의 바로 앞에 감리교 여선교회(UMW) 선배들이 설립한 CCUN(Church Center for the United Nations)센터를 방문하여 설립목적과 활동 상황 등을 알아보는 시간을 가졌습니다.
CCUN은 1963년 설립 이후 UN의 동반자로 여성의 평화, 안정, 평등 옹호를 목적으로 국내외에서 여러 가지 프로그램 개발과 교육을 통해 여성들의 권리보호와 지위향상을 위해 노력하고 있는 비정부 기관입니다. 특히 CCUN의 사회정의부 이성옥 부국장님의 강의로 감리교 여선교회의 역사와 평화 지향을 위한 다양한 프로그램을 소개받고 “13단계의 지속성 캠페인”을 배우고 직접 우리의 삶에 적용해본 시간은 우리 자신을 돌아보고 서로의 경험을 나누고 앞으로의 계획을 함께 세워보는 뜻깊은 시간이었습니다.
그 밖에 필라델피아에서 빈민선교로 수고하시는 이태후 목사님과  브레드호프 공동체의 박성훈 형제 등을 모시고 지역사회에서 여러 가지 모양으로 하나님의 사랑과 평화를 전하며 사역하시는 분들의 실질적인 경험담을 통해 이 땅에 다양한 모습으로 평화를 이루어가시는 하나님의 역사를 깨달은 시간도 가졌습니다.
세계평화와 한반도 평화통일… 나와는 너무나 멀고 크게만 느껴졌던 개념들이 이번 세미나를 통해 내 안의 평화, 내 가정의 평화, 우리 교회 안의 평화가 하나님께서 이 땅에 이루시고자 하는 그 어떤 평화보다 귀하고 기본적인 단계라는 것을 체험하는 기회가 되었습니다.

NNKUMW UN SEMINAR 2016

             “Peace and Women,” was the main topic of the NNKUMW UN Seminar 2016. 70 KUMW members gathered from all over the states to learn and share subjects such as, “Peace in Me,” “Peace with Neighbors,” “Peace with Nature,” and “Peace in God.”
We learned how the Bible defines peace, the role of peacemakers, how to interact with those with poor spirits around us, and how to deal with spiritual weakness within us. The bible study continued on how to achieve Peace in God. We learned that forgiveness should be the first step toward peacemaking in any relationships including our relationship with God. Only Wholeness with Holiness will recover peace within ourselves, our families, our neighbors, our churches and with God.
The Seminar continued the next day with the Assistant General Secretary of Christian Social Action Committee of CCUN (Church Center for United Nations), Ms. Sung-Ok Lee’s workshop learning about the history of UMW and CCUN. The UMW members established the center in 1963 and have been working closely with UN to continue its mission, “Advocating for Peace, Security and Equality for Women.” We learned about the “13 Steps of Sustainability” as one of CCUN’s goals and shared our own experiences and ideas on how to implement the steps in our daily lives.
After our tour of the UN, we visited the CCUN and had sessions on its history, programs and their efforts for women’s empowerment and sustainable development. It was heartwarming to see how hard they have worked for last five decades and how they changed not only the lives of women, but of world history.
The Seminar also invited various speakers like Pastor Taehoo Lee who serves the children and community in North Central Philadelphia, and Brother Sung Hoon Park from the Bruderhof Communities. They came and shared their understanding of Peace in God and how they live fulfilling their visions as God guides them. These were eye opening sessions for me to learn how they interpret the meaning of peace and apply them in their daily lives.
Peace and Women, Peace on Earth, and Peace in the Korean peninsula… they all used to be such big and foreign topics to me before this seminar. However, I learned that peace starts in me, so that it may spread to my neighbors, our churches, and our personal relationship with God. God has his plans and our job is to be his peacemakers and follow his guide to create his Kingdom here and now.

2016년 몽골 기독여성훈련을 다녀와서

제6회 몽골 기독여성훈련이 10월 21일과 22일 이틀 동안 ‘평화와 여성’의 주제를 가지고 몽골의 수도인 울람바토우의 칭클테교회에서 열렸다.

우리 일행 7명(김명래, 손미애, 박나미, 손영희, 김영남, 영애 밀러, 김경숙)은 10월16일 각자 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 메인, 보스턴 그리고 캘리포니아에서 떠나 17일 저녁에 인천공항에서 합류하였고 다시 몽골 울람바토우 공항에 밤 10시 반에 도착하였다. 마중 나오신 김선례 선교사님과 홍혜윤 선교사님, Grace 사모님의 도움으로 호텔에 짐을 풀고 다음 날 18일 화요일 아침에 칭글테교회로 가서 호스피스 사역에 동참하였다.

의사, 간호사 등 12명 정도의 호스피스 사역자들과 함께 간단한 예배들 드리고 난 후에 3팀으로 나뉘어서 통역자와 함께 환자들의 집들을 방문하였다. 대부분이 말기 암 환자들이라고 하는 그들에게 우리가 해 줄 수 있는 것이라고는 하나님이 그들에게 평안한 마음을 주시도록 기도할 뿐이었다. 환자들이 조금이나마 아픔과 고통이 덜하기를 바라고 옆에서 돌보며 지켜보는 가족들을 위하여 기도하면서 그들도 모두 예수님이 사랑하시는 자녀들이므로 하나님 나라의 소망을 품고 살아가기를 간절히 원하면서 기도드렸다. 오후에는 울람바토우 역사박물관을 견학하고 몽골 전통공연을 관람할 기회가 있었다.

 19일 수요일에는 게릍트교회와 카이로스센터, 축복의삶 교회, 볼락그 교회 그리고 주르홀 교회를 방문하였고 20일 목요일에는 구치소를 방문할 수 있었다. 여자교도관이 이번에 전국연합회에서 기증한 탁구대를 보여주면서 단체 사진을 찍을 수 있도록 허락해주었다.  100여명의 수감자들이 마당에 모여 예배를 드리는 중에 ‘좋으신 하나님’을 따라 부르는 분들도 있었고 귀를 기울이고 김명래 총무님의 설교를 열심히 들으며 아멘으로 화답하는 분들도 있어  오히려 우리가 은혜를 받는 시간이었다. 오후에는 다시 칭클테교회로 돌아와서 기독여성훈련 준비를 하였다.

이번 훈련에는 몽골의 울람바토우에 있는 12개 연합감리교회에서 70여명의 여선교회 회원들이 모였는데 젖먹이 어린아이까지 데리고 와서 열심히 하는 회원, 또 불편한 다리를 목발에 의존하고 참석한 회원도 있어 오히려 우리가 감사하고 도전을 받았다. 첫날 개회예배를 시작으로 두 차례의 ‘여선교회 목적문 성경공부’가 있었고 공동체 훈련과 크래프트 시간 – 십자가 만들기, 풍선 만들기에는 서로 하나가 되기 위해 최선을 다하고 사랑을 나누고 즐거워하는 귀한 시간이었다.

전체강의로는 현지인 강사의 몽골여성과 건강에 대한 세미나가 있었다. 우리 팀들이 준비한 웍샵으로는 양일에 걸쳐서 자연과 평화-기후문제, 기도, 음식과 건강, 기독교인의 부부생활 그리고 여선교회 역사와 다양한 선교로 알차게 진행되었는데 처음으로 개인이 웍샵을 선택해서 하루에 2가지를 듣게 하였다. 마지막으로 실천계획과 평가회 후에 폐회예배로 몽골기독여성훈련을 마쳤다.

23일 주일에는 3팀으로 나뉘어 주르홀 교회, 담부교회 그리고 타흘트 교회로 가서 예배드리고 오후에는 다시 칭글테 교회로 돌아와서 홈레스 예배에 참여하였는데 그들에게 식사대접과 모자와 장갑을 선물로 나누어드린 후에 모든 공식적인 사역을 마쳤다.

특별히 이번 몽골기독여성훈련에서 큰 보람은 6년전부터 한인여선교회 전국연합회가 실시한 몽골기독여성훈련을 받았던 우르제와 나라 사역자가 미션목사로 안수를 받고 몽골현지인 교회인 게를트교회와 담브교회를 섬기게 된것이다.

그들이 최초의 UMC몽골교회 목사들로서 목회를 하게되어 너무도 자랑스러웠고, 하나님께 감사를 드렸다.  처음으로 몽골선교를 다녀오면서 느끼는 것은 부족한 사람을 불러 선교대열에 서게 하신 하나님의 은혜에 감사한 마음뿐이다.

어려운 가운데 온 마음과 뜻과 정성을 다하여 사역하시는 선교사님들과 현지인 사역자들 모두에게 하나님의 은총이 늘 함께하시길 기도드리며 몽골에도 복음의 씨앗이 뿌려져서 많은 선교의 열매를 맺고 훌륭한 여성지도자들이 나오리라 기대하면서, 뒤에서 기도해주시고 후원해주신 모든 여선교회 회원들께 감사드린다.

Report on 2016 Mongol United Methodist Women Leadership Training

The 6th Leadership Training for the Mongol UMW members was held at the Chingeltei UMC Mission Center in Ulaanbaatar, Mongol from 10/21- 22, under the title of "Women and the Peace." The group of seven (Myungrae Kim Lee, Julie Sohn, Namy Park, Young Hee Jun, Young Hart, Young Ae Miller, and Kyung Sook Kim) each departed from New York, New Jersey, Main, Boston and California and met at Incheon airport. We then all travelled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongol as a group. When we arrived at the airport around 10:30pm, missionary Sun Lae Kim and Heayoon Hong greeted us and took us to a hotel where we stayed for the next five days.
The following morning, we headed to the Chingeltei church to participate in the hospice ministry with twelve others who were doctors and nurses. We had a short devotion together, in groups of three, and off we went with a translator to visit the homes of the cancer patients.
All we can offer for those suffering patients, in the last stage of sickness, was to pray for God’s mercy for their peace of mind. I sincerely prayed for their families who were watching their loved ones suffering and dying from sickness.  Since Jesus loves everyone, I prayed for the families for their strength, to strengthen their faith, and hope in God. In the afternoon, we visited the History Museum in Ulaanbaatar, and also had a chance to see a Mongolian traditional performance.
The next day, Wednesday the19th, we visited Gerelt UMC (Kairos Center),  Blessed Life Church, Bolark Church, and Geruho Al church. The following day, we visited a detention center.  A female guard showed us a ping- pong table donated by NNKUMW, and gave us a permission to take group pictures. All together there were about 100 detainees who we worshipped with together.  I heard some detainees said “Amen,” when they heard a sermon given by Myungrae Kim, and some said “God is good.”  We experienced the grace of God in that place. In the afternoon we came back to the Chingeltei UMC Mission Center to prepare for the next day leadership training for the Mongol UMW.
At this leadership training, sixty women came from the local UMC and mission churches in the Ulaanbaatar area. One woman came with a child still young enough to depend on her breast milk. One woman came with disabled leg in a crutch. In spite of all the obstacles they face, I saw their sincerity in learning and sharing which challenged me and at same time. I felt God’s blessing in this place and in this time together.
The first day of training started with a worship service followed by the two bible studies based on the Purpose of the UMW.  We also had "Community Bound" exercises, followed by arts and crafts time; allowing us an environment to come together to become one in Christ. 
Next, a lecture was given by a local lay leader on "Mongol Women and their Health."  The NNKUMW team prepared for workshops on the subjects on Peace and Nature-Climate Justice, Prayer, Food and Health, Husband and Wife Relationship in Christian Perspective and the History of UMW.
Lastly, there were action plans created by the Mongol UMW and evaluation for the last two days of leadership training.  After that, the program ended with a closing worship service.
On Sunday of the 23rd, we broke into groups of three and visited each of the Damba UMC,  Jurghall church and Tarta church.  And in the afternoon we came back to the Chingeltei Mission Center, and had a worship service with the homeless people. Afterwards we served dinner and presented gifts.  We were officially done with our mission work in Ulaanbaatar, Mongol.
This was my first time working with the Mongol mission. Although I feel I am lacking in many ways, I thank God for His calling and inviting me to this mission.
In the midst of all the hardships and difficulties, I witnessed the Mongol missionaries carrying their mission works with all their heart, mind, and strength.  I pray that someday God’s work will be flourished through many women leaders so that whole Mongol nation will come to know God. 
I sincerely appreciate NNKUMW members for their prayers and supports to have Mongol mission possible.

몽골 호스피스 사역 참가 수기

미국에서 오랜 시간 비행기를 세 번씩 갈아타고 몽골 울란바토우에 밤에 도착했다.

그다음 날 우리 일행은 칭클레교회 2층에 있는 호스피스 사무실을 방문했다. 호스피스 사역은 몽골에서 연합감리교회가 실시하는 사역의 하나임을 알게 되었다. 예배 후 우리는 3팀으로 나누어 직접 환자들의 집을 방문하기로 하였다.

나와 김영남 권사는 같은 팀이 되어 몽골 의사 아가와 간호사와 함께 몽골 전통 집 게루에사는 환자집을 방문했다.

게루 안에는 석탄과 나무를 같이 때는 난로가 있고 조그만 공간에 조그만 침대 2개와 간단한 식사 도구와 TV와 불상이 있었다. 침대 위에 얼굴이 시커멓게 된 얼굴을 한 노인이 누워 있었고, 중년남자와 여자, 20살이 안돼 보이는 여자와 남자 그리고 1살쯤 되어 보이는 여자 아이가 있었다.

그 노인은 간암으로 고통을 받고 있는데 다리가 퉁퉁 부어 손으로 누르면 다리의 살이 들어가 나오지 않았다. 진료하기 전에 나는 그 노인을 붙잡고 간절히 치유해달라고 기도를 드렸다. 진료 후 몽골 전통차 수테차를 중년 부인이 먹으라고 주어서 마셨다. 수테차는 몽골 사람이 늘 먹는 차로 우유에 녹차를 타서 먹는 차다.가족관계를 물어보니 그 좁은 공간에 4세대가 살며, 나이를 물어 본 후 나는 무척 당황하였다.  60대의 노인은 치아가 다 빠져 80살이 넘게 보였고, 60살이 넘어 보이는 남자는 48살이라고 했다.

첫 번째 환자 집에서 나와 자동차를 타고 두 번째 환자 집을 방문했다. 매우 늙어 보이는 노인이 게루안의 침대에 홀로 누워 굉장히 고통스러워하고 있었다. 폐암과 갑상선암을 앓고 있어 숨 쉬는 것도 힘들어했다. 고통을 감소시키는 모르핀 약을 주었는데 혼자 먹지 못해서 간호사에게 먹여 달라고 했다. 간호사는 숟가락으로 약을 잘게 갈아 물을 타서 먹여 주었다.

이번에도 나는 너무도 안타까워 그 노인의 손을 붙잡고 치유해달라고 간절히 기도했다. 식구가 몇 명이냐고 물었다. 노인은 딸이 하나 있는데 일을 가서 밤늦게나 집에 온다고 했다.

그 노인은 무척 아파하며 울기 시작했다. 약을 사 먹을 돈도 없고 겨울을 넘길 땔감 살 돈도 없다고 걱정했다. 우리는 노인의 이야기를 듣고 너무 가슴이 아파서 겨울 땔감이라도 사라고 돈을 주었더니 그 노인은 고맙다고 울었다.

우리는 우는 노인을 두고 게루를 나오는데 마음이 무척 무겁고 가슴이 아팠다. 

몽골 이 땅에 예수님의 사랑이 필요하며, 죽어가는 그들이 불상을 버리고 하나님을 영접하길 기도한다.

그리고 더 많은 환자가 호스피스 사역에 돌봄을 받게 되기를 바란다.

 Reflection on the Hospice Mission in Mongolia           

We arrived at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia after changing the airplanes three times.  On the first day we (I along with Ms Young Nam Kim and, Aga, the Mongolian physician and a Mongolian nurse) visited the hospice site.  The facility is constructed in the shape of a traditional Mongolian geru.  The geru is heated by a stove fired with coal and woods, located in the middle of the room. In addition, the room is furnished with two small beds, a simple dining table, a TV, and a Buddha statue.  An old woman, whose face is dark, was lying on the bed. There was also a middle aged man and woman, a young man and woman whose ages are about twenty years old, and a one year old girl.  The old woman suffers from liver cancer and her legs are so swollen.  Once her legs are positioned, they could not return to another position without intense pain. I fervently and earnestly prayed for healing, while holding her hands. Upon finishing prayer, the middle aged woman served the traditional Mongolian tea, Sutae.  Sutae mixed with milk is common beverage drunk by Mongolians daily.  I have learned that four generations live in that small house.  I am even surprised to find out their actual ages; for they look much older than their given ages.  A man about my age, looks to 80 years or older since he has lost all his teeth.  A forty year old man looks older than sixty years old.  I speculate that the life of Mongolians seem very tough and harsh in general. 
We visited the second hospice site.  The old woman was lying alone and seemed to be in much pain. She had trouble breathing and suffered from lung and thyroid gland cancers.  The nurse fed her morphine pills to help relieve her unbearable pain.  I fervently and earnest prayed for healing while holding her hands.  She has one daughter and told me that she works hard and comes home late at night. She began to cry from the pain. She said that she has no money to buy medicine and firewood to survive this winter. Her story broke my heart. I gave some money to this old, sick woman, so that she could survive this winter at least.  Ms. Young Nam Kim also gave her some money.  As we left her house, we all felt heavy in our hearts and felt our hearts ache. We pray that the love of Jesus gives them hope and peace. It is our prayer that they will be born anew and live eternally in Christ Jesus, which they have not experience in this world.

2016 몽골 홈레스 선교사역

2016년 몽골 홈레스 선교사역 2016년 몽골 기독여성 훈련을 금요일과 토요일 에 실시하고 몽골에서 맞는 첫 주일이었다.

전국연합회에서 보낸 7명의 팀원들은 둘씩 혹은 셋씩 짝을 지어 현지 연합감리교회들을 방문하고 그들과 함께 예배를 드렸다.  오후  3시 30분쯤에 우리는 다시 홈레스 사역을 위해  칭글테 교회에서 모였다.

매 주일마다 칭글테교회에서 홈레스 분들을 위한 예배가 있는데 보통 30명에서 50명 정도가 온다고 했다. 이날에는 여자와 남자 합하여 30여명  참석하였는데 대부분이 남자들이었고 몇 명의 여자들도 있었다.  우리는 그들과 함께 먼저 찬양하고 기도하고 설교 말씀을 들었다.

나는 몽골에 오기 전에 홈레스 예배에서 설교해 달라는 부탁을 받았고 마음에 큰 부담을 가졌었다.  

노숙자들에게 무슨 설교를 하여야 할지 막막했다.  그리고 성령님의 도우심을 간절히 기도하고 있을 때, 빌립보서 4장 6절과 7절 말씀이 생각났다. 내가 힘들었을 때 매일 외우며 다니던 말씀이었다. 힘든 형편에 처해있는 그들에게 빌립보서 4장의 다른 말씀들과 연결하여 이 말씀을 나누었다.

나는 하나님께서 그들에게 처한 상황과 환경을 초월해서 그들의 힘든 상황을 잘 이겨낼 힘을 주시고 그들의 삶에 평화 주시기를 간절히 바라는 마음으로 하나님의 말씀을 전했다. 그 들 중에는 눈물을 닦는 이들도 있었다.

"아무것도 염려하지 말고 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 너희 구할 것을 감사함으로 하나님께 아뢰라.그리하면 모든 지각에 뛰어나신 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 너희 마음과 생각을 지키시리라" 

예배가 끝나고 그들에게 따뜻한 음식을 제공했고 각각 개인들에게 모자와 장갑을 선물로 나누었다.

홈레스분들은  이렇게 매주 교회에 와서 예배드리고 따뜻한 음식을 제공받고 간다고한다. 하나님 나라의 확장을 위해 힘쓰시는 몽골의 연합감리교 선교사님들께 하나님의 축복이 함께 하시기를 바란다.

2016 Mongolia Homeless Mission

It was the first Sunday in Mongolia after two long days of 2016 Mongol Christian Women Training which was held on Friday and Saturday. In a team of two or three, the seven members of the National Network of Korean UMw visited local UMC churches and worshiped with them.  Around 3:30pm, we gathered back at the Chingeltei Church for homeless mission
Every Sunday, the Chingeltei Church has a worship service for homeless people. Usually, about 30 to 50 homeless people come for the worship service, and this time, about 30 homeless people came.  They were mostly men and only a few women came.
We sang praise songs, prayed, and listened to the sermon together.  Before I came to Mongolia, I was asked to give a sermon at this worship service.  I was very much burdened.  What sermon can I give to the homeless people!  As I was praying hard for guidance of Holy Spirit, suddenly, I was reminded of the verses which I memorized and cited daily when I was going through a difficult time, Philippians 4:6-7.  I shared these verses along with some other verses of Philippians chapter 4.  I wanted God to empower them to overcome their poor situation transcending the circumstances and environment and grant peace in their lives.  Some were wiping tears from their faces.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:6-7
After the worship service, they were provided a warm meal.  Then they also received a hat and gloves that NNKUMw prepared as gifts. So, every Sunday, the homeless people come to the church and receive God’s message and a warm meal.  May God bless the UMC missionaries in Mongolia for their hard work to expand God’s kingdom.

독서프로그램 독후감 “빈튼 의사의 선교 편지”

역사는 이긴 자들의 것이라는 말이 있다. 이긴 자들이 남긴 기록들이 후대 사람들에게 전해진다는 뜻인 것 같다. 하지만, 성경은 이긴 자, 정복한 사람들의 기록이 아니다. 왕따 당하던 한 작은 민족의 입으로 전해 내려오던 하나님에 대한 이야기를 적은 책이고, 예수님께서 십자가에서 돌아가시고, 약하고 깨어진 사람들을 통하여 복음이 어떻게 전하여지고, 성령이 어떻게 일하셨나 하는 이야기들이다.
오래전 신학 공부를 할 때, 기독교 역사 시간에, 1600년대 영국의 한 마을의 교회 재정기록에서, 성만찬 그릇을 덮는 제단 보의 세탁비가 많이 들고 작음을 비교하면서, 교회의 담임 목사들이 성만찬을 자주 했는지 안 했는지를 알 수 있음을 배웠다. 별것 아닌 것 같은 세탁비용이지만, 역사를 배우고, 과거의 역사를 되짚어 보는 학자들에게는 그 기록들이 아주 값진 것을 캐낼 수 있는 좋은 자료가 될 수 있음을 배우는 시간이었다.

빈튼 의사가 1891년에 한국에 선교사로 나와서 자신의 윗사람에게 보고서로 보냈던 편지들도 마찬가지이다. 이렇다 할 내놓을만한 큰 선교사건도 없고, 잘 알려지지도 않은 빈튼이라는 의사 선교사의 보고서인 이 편지들이 보통 사람들에게는 그리 마음이 가지 않는 기록일 뿐이다. 이 책은 드라마도 아니고, 다큐멘터리도 아니다. 단지 한 선교사가 한국에 나가는 때부터 그곳에서 미국 본부의 엘린우드 박사에게 8년 동안 보낸 선교와 회의록의 보고 편지내용을 날짜별로 모아서 한국어로 옮긴 편지 묶음이다. 빈튼 의사의 선교 시작은 있지만, 끝이 없고, 구성도 없다. 그저 기록일 뿐이다. 지루한 회의록과 별로 진전이 없어 보이는 선교 활동 내용, 환자를 고쳤다는 보고, 선교사들 사이의 일어나는 일들이 적혀있을 뿐이다.
그러나 이 편지들을 모아서 한국어로 옮긴 김인수 교수에게는 충분히 가슴을 뛰게 할 만한 가치가 있었다. 장로교 주한 미국 북 장로교회 선교사회의 서기로 섬기던 빈튼의사의 편지 기록들은 그 당시 선교사들이 한국에서 어떻게 사역을 하였는지, 한국 사람들의 정서, 사회와 역사까지도 엿볼 수 있다. 그리고 그 당시 감리교와 장로교 선교사들이 누구누구였는지를 회의록에서 볼 수있다. 북 장로교회 선교사회의 강한 조직력과 재정에 대해서도 알 수 있다. 미국에 있는 선교회의 조직력은 말할 것도 없겠지만, 한국에 나온 선교사들의 단단한 조직력과 팀워크가 돋보인다. 그리고, 심신이 지친 선교사들의 안식년 같은 쉼과 충전의 시간을 충분히 갖게 하고, 선교사들은 당당히 휴가를 신청하고, 월급도 지급되는 것들을 알게 되면서, 하나님의 사역은 좋은 조직력과 팀워크에서 더 큰 탄력을 받고 잘 이루어질 수 있다는 것을 다시 한 번 깨닫게 되었다.
편지 묶음인 이 책, 빈튼 의사의 선교 편지는 구약의 느헤미아서와 같다. 변호사의 눈에는 그가 훌륭한 변호사로 보이고, 행정가의 눈에는 더없이 좋은 행정가이고, 정치인에게는 큰 정치가이듯이. . . 나의 눈에는 이 책에서 선교사회의 조직력과 팀워크가 보였다. 다른 사람이 읽으면 이 책에는 내가 보지 못한 또 다른 보물이 나오게 될 것이다. 이 책의 한국어 묶음 뒤에는 영어 원문의 편지 묶음이 같이 있어서 책이 제법 두꺼워 보이는 것이 흠이지만, 1890년대의 한국의 기독교 복음화와 그 시대 선교사들의 사역이 알고 싶은 회원들에게는 이 책이 좋을 것이다. 이 책을 통하여 내가 보지 못한 가슴을 뛰게 하는 보물들이 더 나오기를 기대한다.

The Reading Program Leads to Action!
For 140 years, United Methodist Women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to:

. Expand understanding of and participation in God’s mission.

. Increase sensitivity to all human beings—their needs, interests and concerns.

. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.

. Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life.

. Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge.

. Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission.

The Reading Program:  C. C. Vinton, MD’s Missionary Letters

It is said that the history is written by the winners. I guess what we read in history is what was left by the winners. But the Bible is not recorded by the winners and the conquerors. It was written from oral traditions of a small nation who was always harassed by neighboring countries, and it is about Jesus who died on the cross, how the Gospel of Jesus was spread and the Holy Spirit worked through by weak and broken people.  
In my seminary years long ago, in the class of History of Christianity, we were looking at some finance records of old England churches in 1600s. Cleaning fees of the Communion covers could tell us how often or how rarely the pastors had communions with the congregations. The cleaning fee of the cover may not be significant to us, but to those scholars who study church histories, it may bear priceless information and new findings in history.
I feel the same about this collection of the letters written by Dr. Vinton to his superior from 1891. He is not a well-known missionary and had not accomplished great works in Korea, either. Ordinarily, not many people are interested in reports of meetings and missions 125 years ago in Korea. This book is neither fiction nor document. It is simply a collection of reports in order in the form of letters by Dr. Vinton to his boss Dr. Ellinwood in the States.  There is certainly the beginning of his mission as he prepared to leave for Korea. However, there is neither ending nor structure. It is just a collection of records: boring minutes, reports of his missions, and how he saw and treated patients in Korea.
Yet to Professor Kim, In Soo who found the letters and translated in Korean, these letters were certainly an exciting thing! The letters are telling us the work of missionary, Dr. Vinton who served as a secretary to the Northern Presbyterian Missionary Society in Korea, how Korean people were and how Korea was socially and politically.   We can also know the power of organization and finance support of the Northern Presbyterian Missionary Society and their team work in Korea. I was reading with an interest about their vacation with pays, and missionaries requested their vacation to rest and to be recharged.  I learned that God’s mission will have synergy with finance support, strong organization, and team work.
This collection of letters written by Dr. Vinton is like the book of Nehemiah to me. If a lawyer reads it, Nehemiah is such a good lawyer, to an administrator, a wonderful administrator, a politician, a good politician… I saw strong organization of the Missionary Society and their team work. If other person reads this book, she will find different jewel in it.
The only downside of the book is that the second part has the original letters in English, and the book is thick. However, those UMW who are interested in missions in Korea in 1890s may find other jewels that I never saw in it.

그릇 기름기 제거 방법
앞으로 추수감사절, 크리스마스 그리고 새해의 연휴를 맞아 오븐 쓸 일이 많이 생깁니다. 요리하다 보면 기름진 음식물이 그릇에 너무 달라붙어 씻기 난감한 일이 생기는데요, 이럴때 보통은 식기세제용 비누 푼 물에 문제의 그릇을 담가 놓았다가 문질러 씻잖아요, 그런데 아주 힘들이지 않고 간단히  해결하는 방법이 있습니다.
세탁하고 말릴 때 한 장씩 집어넣고 쓰는 dryer sheet를 이용하는 겁니다.
방법도 아주 간단합니다.
먼저 개수대나 커다란 통에 따뜻한 물을 채운 다음 식기 세제용 비누를 조금 풀어넣고 문제의 그릇을 집어넣은 다음 dryer sheet 한 장을 집어넣습니다. 그 상태로 하룻밤이나 적어도 한 시간 정도 기다렸다가 솔로 문지르면 힘들지 않고도 깨끗이 닦을 수 있습니다.
또 다른 방법은 마시다 남은 콜라를 모아났다가 활용해보는 겁니다.
눌어붙은 팬이나 냄비 바닥에 콜라를 부어놓고 하룻밤 지나서 닦으면 됩니다.

How to Clean those Hard to Scrub Pots and Pans
Here are two tricks for cleaning those "hard to scrub" pots and pans this holiday season. Many people soak them in water with some dish soap overnight, but oftentimes this is not enough.
Method 1: Dryer sheet
Directions:
1)Add a little bit of dish soap and warm water to pot or pan.
2)Add one dryer sheet.
3)Let it soak for at least an hour, preferably overnight.
4)Wipe with normal sponge or scrub pad.
Method 2: Cola
Directions:
1)Cover the bottom of the pot or pan with a layer of cola.
2)Let it soak for at least an hour, preferably overnight.
3)Wipe with normal sponge or scrub pad.
All the grime and hard to scrub food should come right off!

1884년, 오하이오 연회 리벤나 지방의 제일연합감리교회의 여선교회 회원이었던 루시디아 볼드윈은 어둠 속에 살던 한국 여성들에게 복음을 전하기 위해 $88을 지정헌금하였습니다. 가족을 잃고 슬픔과 절망에 빠져 있던 볼드윈은 소망을 잃은 한국여성들의 삶에 대한 이야기를 듣고 남편의 재산을 정리하여 헌금하였습니다. 성경의 밀가루 반죽에 넣어진 누룩처럼, 한국여성을 향한 볼드윈의 헌신은 커다란 사랑이 되어 한국에 전해졌습니다.

1885년, 한국으로 파송을 받은 감리교 여선교사 매리 스크랜튼은 이 헌금으로 이화학당을 시작하였습니다. 한국여성들이 중심이 되어 절망 뿐인 한국이 소망을 회복할 수 있도록 여성들을 교육하였으며 현재의 이화여자대학교로 발전하여 여전히 영향력 있는 수많은 여성리더를 길러내고 있습니다.

루시디아 볼드윈과 메리 스크랜튼의 선교열매인 우리 한인여선교회 회원들, 한인여선교회는 우리가 받은 사랑을  다시 전하고 있습니다.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

The National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.  

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
